my set up is:
internet > router(with nat) > LAN (consisting of several computers)
but win xp claims (at this warning that i am refering to )that having a gateway is a better solution.

teodoros - good god no - using a router with NAT you'll be fine - out of interest what model router is it? You might want to add a software firewall to the computers so that you can keep some control over out bound connections but I'll leave that to you.

if your win2k box is formatted in NTFS the win98 box will not be able to see the files on it but the 2k can see the 98.
Teo, shouldn't you start your own thread instead of taking over someone elses?

maybe its different on 2K (don't see why but).... since when was this the case Tedob? I've got XP at home formatted as NTFS and the win98 box in the LAN can quite happily see files on the XP box - ok they are going through a router .... but surely in a network and in terms of file sharing NTFS should not make much difference should it (I realise that it would be more secure than FAT32 etc)? If it's different for 2k would you be able to say why?? All the boxes at work are either 2k or XP so I only have the home setup to go on in this scenario.

Have you got the same administrator userid & password on both systems and are you logged on under that ID. I did have a similar problem, however when I created the same userid & password on both systems, poof .
