That's a little bit of an exagguration - you can get Gentoo installed in a few hours if you want. Obviously if you compile everything from source and start from the basically partitioning/bootstrapping it is going to take longer though. If you want Linux installed in under an hour you probably wouldn't choose Gentoo, just as I wouldn't choose SUSE if I wanted to compile everything from source.

As for those supposed advocacy bordering on insanity, I have not really encountered that on any of the sites I visit. In fact, I've found Debian users are the worse when it comes to distro wars or installations (apparently you are an idiot and a troll if you dare to criticise apt-get and the install process).

Ahhhh Shrekkie. You are only ONE of many people using Gentoo. I know you think you're the reason I hate it, but you're not. I THOUGHT I could joke with you about it in the same way you ditched SuSE and told me about it. But I guess I can't and no longer will joke with you at all.

The actual reasons I don't like it?

The same reason this thread was started, most of the user base thinks Gentoo tastes better than Pepsi, swallows better than Monica, gets better coverage than AT&T, sounds better than Bose, and can go faster than a Maclaren F1.

It's a ****ing OS, no matter which one you use, if I piss on your keyboard it becomes worthless for a few hours at least. People think Debian users are bad...Well they are, I saw Pwaring's post asking for help.

They went from willing to help to "You're just to ****ing stupid to use it! How dare you say Debian is not the best you troll!"

I'm not kiddnig, they called him a troll. Gentoo users are turning into the same thing. How can you have freedom with Open Source when you aren't free to choose what you want without some ******* telling you you're **** because you don't use Gentoo?

Gentoo the Penguine breed I have no problem with, Gentoo the file manager, I like it, and I use it, Gentoo the Linux distro based on BSD, I LIKE IT...But, Gentoo the user base, I'd rather choke my balls with snapping turtles.

How many Gentoo users have pissed me off in the last month? Hmm, about 50.

The originality thing is also quite true. Every Linux distro came up with a name all it's own...Well except Mandrake, which is a Mandragore plant. (Ohhh look at that I actually know what a Mandragore plant is)

Gentoo took it's name from a Breed of Penguine, and a shell. that is a very stupid reason not to like something over, so I don't include that in my rant, as it is only the name. But it is kind of funny.

In case anyone is interested, this post on LinuxQuestions.org is where you see the true fanaticism of some Debian users.

Well except Mandrake, which is a Mandragore plant.
Well, that's the original source (original origin, if you will) of the word. But Mandrake was based on Mandrake the Magician, a comic character. That's the reason that they had a wizard thing as their logo until they got sued (DC comics, I think). Now, shrekkie can sympathize with them for sure .

Hey, you use what works. And I fully support at least trying an OS long enough to learn it. So, you using Lindows is hardly something I would look down upon. In fact, I thank you for being able to take a step foward in your learning process to discover and possibly even master in the OS world.

    More experience rarley hurtrs.

Actually, I am trying to learn Plan 9 (over 1000's pages in the manual).

I used to be a Red Hat user and never made it over to Fedora, I'll have to give it a try soon. My two most used OS's are TurboLinux and Linspire (so much easier for my guest to use).

I would have to say, my first flavor of linux was IcePack and I had a lot of fun playing with it. Last I heard they were building an IcePack server edition and then the site went down. Hope they come back soon, I'm starting to learn a lot about linux and soon I will be ready to contribute back to the community.

My only problem is finding the right tool for the job, there is way too many to choose from (don't get me wrong choice is good) and I have to test many different flavors to find the one which is right for me.
