Why would this be better? And where are the patches coming from?
I for 1 don't like installing patches that aren't downloaded from the MS sites.
I agree. And besides, it's not really hard to download the patches. I did all the critical patches except one (SP1) in one swoop when I reinstalled my Windows. I don't see how there would be any sense in what the thread starter was talking about, but maybe I'm just missing something...

if you would have read everything that i had originally posted then you would have realized that because of blaster/nachi and sasser, it is impossible to get onto the network without being infected therefore, i cannot get to the microsoft site without more trouble than it is worth -- just to let everyone know, i ended up just q-chaining together all updates made before sept 2002, and then made a batch file that had the rest with the switches /z /m and then everything goes in one big swoop

Now that is a great idea..don't know why it wasn't mentioned earlier....
Wouldn't it be easier to D/l SP1.. as sp1 includes some extras that are not in the list of updates.. then qchain all updates since oct 2002? just a thought

because from what i understood when qchain was explained to me was that every time you want to add a new patch you have to re-qchain everything back together...
if i am wrong please let me know...
plus it seems easier to do this since all the patches after sp1 are batchable

I have the microsoft update CD that moxnix was talking about on the first page. It was FREE, totally, no s&h or any of that stuff (of course I can't find the page now). I did have to give them my address and email, but I haven't gotten any spam or bulk mail because of it. Also packaged with the cd is a 12 month free trial of etrust antivirus and an etrust firewall (not that I'm using either of them). Problem is, the CD is from February 2004. So any virus who's exploit wasn't patched by that time would still need to be patched.
What I really like about this CD is that it is completly automated, insert the disk and press go. Theoretically, you could image copy the cd and deploy it across how ever many computers you are working with. Then you could hit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and download any other critical patches to a USB key, maybe write a little batch file, and you would be good to go. I don't service that many computers (3) so I've never done it. Obviously this won't work on a large scale, but it must be easier than taking computers home every night to update.
Hope this helps

Let Microsoft send you the Security Update CD!
I had a dialup connection, when I migrated from Win98 SE to XP Pro, and I couldnt spend hours downloading all the updates, so i went along to
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
and ordered the the Security CD free of charge.
The CD updates Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE). (it even includes the service packs) and updates your system upto Feb 2004!
whats more, Microsoft also sends you an extra CD with a one year free trial Firewall & Anti-virus Software by Computer Associates. (EZ ARMOUR SECURITY SUITE)
~I see what I see, but what I dont see .. is what Im here to find~
