Hm...
I often use multipartition (sometimes multiboot) systems. Most of the time W2k/XP is on D, E or even once on L partition... never had any problems with updates. Once I made my C partition very small size (20 MB) and it all worked fine.
When I apply SPs on W2k or WinXP it makes temporary folder on partition with biggest free space.
There are also switches that instruct where to unpack the files. but for this one you have to start SP from command prompt.
Also, it would be wise to check out your TEMP and TMP envirement variables.

There is a known problem with installing service pack on a machine when the first drive is less than 30 MB.

This article explains that for xp you have to have 30 mb on the first (c partition because it contains these files Ntldr, Boot.ini, and Ntdetect.com files


though there is not a article in their knowledge base for this issue on xp but the same thinng can happen on 2000 and here is the article for that which the resolution should probly be about the same.

You will want to extract the files from the network serive pack from the command prompt with the /x . once extracted copy the files from that folder to the c: drive manualy. (Ntldr, Boot.ini, and Ntdetect.com) Then from the folder that you unpacked the files to run update.exe and it should work.

Blah. I didn't notice you were on xp. Right click on my computer>manage>diskmanagement>right click on a drive and it says change drive letter and path.

Just do what I said and change the first drive to k:/
Then change the second drive to c:/ and see if that works.
Before you do anything else. Don't forget to back up your data before you do any of this though.

about re assigning drive letters...I did try that once (admitadly, not through the tool you mentioned) but that meant I was not able to boot.
