Hey Hey,
I am quite impressed that this thread has not only survived this long, but that it is significantly green and has the support of some Senior AO members... some of whom I respect greatly.....
SDK has pointed out the contents of gbrowne40's previous AO post.... It doesn't seem to me like a person would make such a huge leap in a year.. and someone who has taken Comp Sci in uni and then worked on home automation and circuit board design should know how to reset a BIOS password.
I could also attack gbrowne40 for his claim to have opted out of CS @ University and going straight into home automation... because according to a PM I recieved from him he dabbled in several other subjects and has a degree... sounds to me like it wasn't straight from one to the other.... but I'm not going to make this a personal attack... There would be to many things to point out...
Instead I'm going to ask why no one has addressed the DSL speeds over a 56K modem... Has anyone considered this and thought about it? DSL, depending on the type, has a speed range from roughly 1Mbps to 52Mbps and a max distance of approx. 18000' (3.4miles). Since there are a lot of DSLAMs located around a city, it's easy to figure out how they can do that small distance... however who knows where a dial-up ISP may be located... it could be a great distance away. Then again... I'll accept that as a possibility... repeaters and other objects can allow for this to happen... Now let's do a speed comparison... If we go with low-end DSL (1Mbps) and compare that to a 56K modem (assuming 56Kbps.. but we'll get into why ou couldn't actually a little later).. The result: The 1Mbps line is 17.85x faster than the 56k connection. To put that into perspective.. a care with a top speed of 200Km/h would be travelling @ 3570Km/h... Now what if our "creative genius" was talking VDSL? 52Mbps is 928.57x faster than a 56Kbps connection... To use our 200Km/h car.. we'd be looking @ 185714Km/h. I'd really like to see that thing run the 1/4 mile. Now I mentioned earlier that an assumption of a full 56Kbps connection was impossible.. You may be asking yourself why, but the answer is quite simple. The FCC regulates the phone line signal strength so that the max you're modem will ever connect at is 53Kbps... Since federal regulations have placed this limit, I'd say you'd be pretty hard pressed to easily beat it.. if at all since you have to negotiate with someone elses equipment on the other end... and who knows how far away that equipment will be.
I think it's time to discuss this "virus free internet." My first question is why focus only on the internet... aren't stand alone machines also vulnerable to viruses? Do we not want to protect them? How about Intranets? Doesn't my network at work qualify to be virus free? This may be nit-picking but it demonstrates how little thought was put into the intitial post in this thread.
To quote gbrowne40's PM to me:
Current hardware will be in place but the software mechanisms will be altered but only the untrained will not notice
We're going to rewrite every software in existance? I think you need to put out a plea to more than just AO... I'd suggest you talk to Microsoft and tell them you want all their software rewritten... see what they say. I have a few ideas. Now current hardware will stay in place? Does this mean we'll still have hard drives with limited capacity and Hayes compantible modems? I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume yes... I'm also guessing we'll still have some programming/scripting languages... or else our computers would be deamed useless. Well then how about I write a little script that fills your hard drive with garbage files... or a program that continually issues your modem a '+++ATH0' string? I could pass those off as viruses.... or do you want to get technical and say this only stops viruses from appending themselves to other software?
Am I hopeful that down the road a technology like this would be feasible? You bet. However in this day and age... it's not just possible... and most definately not probable...
Peace,
HT

Well as long as I have you all assembled. I have developed in theory a car that will run without gasoline all I need is a chemist to develop a fuel that will burn completely and be as volatile as gasoline…
To insure you don’t leak my secret a small good-faith deposit is required but will be returned to you under the terms of the non-disclosure contract.
Did Einstein say I have an idea about energy being equal to mass and some function of atomic weight all I need is a mathematician …
All revolutionary ideas have come from someone who has been a self-contained resource.
Here’s a question asked by one who would change the internet forever with their knowledge of computing:
I was GIVEN a computer today(400mhz, 128ram, 64vid) and I need to format the drive....It's boot order starts with Removable Devices, HARD DRIVE, and then CD rom.... Whoever had it before the person who gave it to me never told them the Admin. Password to go into setup to change the Boot Order... So I cannot get it to boot on my CD...I need to find a way to crack the password!! Can anyone help me?? Lemme know, I would greatly appreciate it...if you need more information--let me know!

I can tell you but you’d have to sign a non-disclosure contract.

Good Day All,
I can remember when I was very young we built a tree house where only club members were allowed to play. When we had our meetings we would pull up the ladder so that non-members couldn’t intrude on our private rendezvous’. Every so often, one of the members would be a little late for the meeting, but the ladder was already pulled up. In order to have us drop the ladder, the person below had to quietly say the password and we would lower the ladder. After awhile we realized that someone might overhear our secret password so we tried to use paper cups and string as the form of communication to transmit our secret. That didn’t work very well and since we were sharing the same cups, we would catch colds from each other. One day while watching an old WWII movie with my dad, I noticed that on the bridge of this large Navy ship they would communicate to different levels of the ship by talking into a tube. Our problems were solved. We found some 1 1/2 pipe of the right length, I tied it to the tree, and now we had effective and secure communications. Everything was great. So we thought. However when the flu season would make its rounds again, each and every one of us would still end up sick at almost the same time.
Although the medium changed the virus was still transmitted.
cheers
Connection refused, try again later.

SDK i have no idea if this is true or not. it just seemed to fit into the scheme of things until i saw his bios post which really shows(imho) what this is all about.

I'll have to wait until he show up again (if he does) to get our answer then!
