We aren't trying to be dicks, just to make sure the site can't suddenly be issued a warning by a company/ISP/coorporation for posting anything directly illegal.

So, if you pirate, that's completely your set of ethics and I won't debate that, as it's your descision. But mentioning it outloud can be dangerous. Stick around, don't let things like this get too personal on you.

Back on topic. Here's a portion of a logfile from a virus removal tool.

c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Shared\Total Commander 7.0 full_install.exe: (deleted)
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Total Commander 7.0 full_install.exe: (deleted)
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\winamp 7.0 full_install.exe: (deleted)
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Xing Shared\winamp 7.0 full_install.exe: (deleted)
c:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\1.3\share\winamp 7.0 full_install.exe: (deleted)
c:\Program Files\Compaq\Shared\Total Commander 7.0 full_install.exe: (deleted)

This virus (ErkezB) searched for directories with the name "share" or "shared",
and put files with names like "winamp 7.0 full_install.exe" that will infect the
machine on which this exe is run.

They're hoping that the "shared" directories might be P2P shared directories.
So, if you download warez frop p2p, you may get some nasty stuff.
This isn't theoretical, but real live evidence that people are putting
this bait out there deliberately.

Believe me, when the ISP is shut down for a week to prove they paid for shitty software, they WILL care about one of their users doing it. Not to mention the trouble and possible fines you'd be paying. Microsoft wants your money, so when you take something from them, don't expect them to leave your testicles.

Speaking as a software developer, usually it is a non stop race between those developing and those making the cracks. While there are some good ways to stop it currently, they are also not very practical for wide distribution.

As a security monkey, if you're downloading things off the internet and installing it without knowing who you can trust, the ability and skill to look at the source, or having the ability to at least take legal action against them....you're retarded.
