What is this?
I just installed XP pro in my machine. When I restart only XP pro logo comes and then screen goes black. No welcome menu.
Istart by safe mode option, then I can see systwm tray with safe mode written on the four corner of the screen. That's it. I can click start menu and everything comes but no background or wallpaper
What is this?

Is your video card compatible with WinXP? Is it on the Hardware Compatibility List, (HCL)? Do you have WinXP compatible drivers loaded or did you rely on your old ones?

Well, there was a home edition b4. And it was fine, I could atleast see the welcome screen and do all the stuff. No change in hardware

Then I'd consider formatting and starting again, it sounds like the load may be corrupt.

Have you tried reinstalling the display driver?
You may need to remove the old one first (you can do that in safe mode).

open a command prompt and type
expand /?
That will give you the appropriate syntax.
you will end up typing something like this:-
expand c:\temp\callcont.dl_ c:\windows\system32\callcont.dll <ENTER>

Use extract to uncompress the .dl_ to .dll and place the file in the correct location.
Ah. Tiger beat me to it. And it's indeed expand, extract is for win9x cab files.
