The UN gave Sudan 30 days to try and disarm the Janjaweed-militia. On Tuesday, the 30 days were over, on Thursday (yesterday) the report (by Jan Pronk) was discussed. Did you want troops there today? Or are you going to give them time to actually fly over there?
Pronk's conclusion is that the Sudanese government isn't capable of totally eliminating the voilence and of securing the security of its people, and proposes to add more troops to the AU (African Union). He also concluded that in fact the Sudanese government did end most of the violence and added to its police force, but for some reason or another the US doesn't agree with that conclusion (I wonder why since they don't have anyone there...) and demands sanctions (cool... more misery for the Sudanese).
The debate about the sanctions is next week...
