linux kernel 2.6.8.1 troubles

hey all
i recently downloaded and installed kernel 2.6.8.1
it boots fine but when i start X i get errors about my sound "/dev/dsp" i think it was
and my nic doesnt work...did anyone else with this kernel get these errors or did i just configure something wrong in gconfig

and if you have any idea how to help please do

Did you configure it the same as the kernel you were previously running?

If so, then it may indicate a problem. But I think it's more likely that you've just not enabled the right drivers.

Get the config from the old kernel, copy it over .config, then do make oldconfig - this attempts to get the same configuration copied over. It won't 100% work though, because the way the kernel is configured changes slightly version-to-version.

If you were using a distro's stock kernel previously, get their .config which they used - they MUST ship it somewhere. It's highly likely that the distro used a patched kernel. Determine if you need the vendor patches, and if so, either apply them (unlikely that the vendor has made a patch set which is 100% up-to-date), or drop them (probably your best bet).

right now im going through the steps of looking for driver details for my hardware and makeing sure they are applied in my kernel config then im going to recompile
now if i set up options as "module"
do i have to do anything extra other then make modules_install ?

You need to do whatever it is your distro does to get modules into the kernel at runtime.

In the case of Debian, this means setting up modconf so that the modules get loaded.

Other distros have their own ways - slackware just has a script.
