Mobile Hacking with a Gameboy DS/Sony PSP

the first thing you said (the gameboy) is using an ARM processor, theres already a toolchain for this in linux and theres already a version of linux that runs on the ARM (several actually, uClinux and then some for PDA's but there running StrongARM's which is a different core)

So as long as its got a JTAG build in somewhere then it really wont be long before it runs linux, I give it around 3 to 4 weeks at the most on its release in the US before we start seeing storys on /. about it running linux.

We had a discussion about these a while back, I dont think you were a member then Iron.

Even the Ipod is looking to put in wifi, they advertised for a post for someone with intergrating Wifi into embedded systems knowledge the other week.

As for modding (hardware hacking....) consoles and other such devices I think its a really interesting area, take a look at the xpod-linux or gamecube-linux, the code is fascinating its really inpressive when things are reverse engineered, also have a look at bunni's page on hacking the xpod, theres some really fascianting stuff there.

hey Spyder why do you think that out of interest? if youve bought the device then IMO its alrite to do what you want with it, I bought a furby many years ago with the intention of ripping out its control electronics and put my own in and making it swear, I know its not the intended use but surely if its ur's its ok? we always go on here about it being alrite to attack your own computers..

The PSP seems like it will be easy to make software for and it's a hell of a system compared to my computer. It's also gonna take memory sticks and have usb2.0 so the memory thing won't be much of a problem. I don't even really see having to make any physical changes. It seems like you could just make software to fool it into loading a OS but I'm not that knowledgeable in the field soI really don't know. Here's a link to the specs on the PSP.

802.11B (or G) is the standard, that tells the manufacture what the freqs have to be, power, protocol and all stuff like that to make it a 802.11 complient device

I believe that because of human nature things will run/do things that they were not intended to do. You guys remember that watch that had Linux on it, because these hand held game systems keep having faster and faster processors it only makes sense. I saw an ad in Super Street the other day for some sort of software and link cables to turn the a Gameboy Advance into a tool for tuning, data logging, and diagnostics on a car!

I know this thread is getting old, but there is some news:

The price point for the DS will be $150. For that much it should be a fun item to pick up and play with. Hope it will be easier to modify then a console, I'd love to be able to run Linux apps on it. I got this link off of Slashdot:

The thought of the manufacturer attempting to create an entirely new wireless infrastructure in competition with the already emerging one is preposterous. The big companies really did learn from the VHS/BetaMax "wars"....

Pfft, if this were true, there wouldn't be two DVD standards now would there? There also wouldn't be two upcoming next gen standards in HD-DVD and BluRay, nor would there be the smattering of different 802.11 specs (a, b, g, h?). For every idea developed for technology by a group of people, there will always be another group of people who think they can do it better differently.

At any rate, how is this any different from the $100 palms or pocketPCs that you can smack a wireless card into? IMO a PDA is already setup to be infinitely more useful for computing than a gameboy ever will. I mean, no doubt it will be done, but as for its practicality for use it's rather limited.
