    Look into the internet2 project...

I beleive at the moment... the fastest people have sent data over the "internet" is at ~ 6.6Gbps...

    https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/i.../msg00000.html

    Nice site though... http://internet2.edu

Search google for some "internet speed records"... there are some very interesting articles out there...

I want to know what kind of hard drives and bus they are using to transfer all that data...
/me off to do some more reading up on the internet2 project...

    I've got them all beat!

I was looking at a site a while back (searching google for it again) that showed me a list of connection speeds, and I saw one that transfered x TeraBytes/second. Can't exactly say it's true but it says it's something discovered a while back. I also google'd the connection and came up with some ISPs but no prices. I'll edit this post if I find it.

EDIT: Found a site that has a list of a lot of connections, not the website I saw but it works: http://home.cfl.rr.com/eaa/Bandwidth.htm

    EDIT2:
    an OC192 has 9953.28 megabits, and a OC3072 has 159.252 gigabits

I know there is supposed to be OC192 between Nago (Okinawa), Japan, and the southern main island of mainland Japan. That is the biggest pipe I know of. There are many smaller 1gbps that criss-cross all over Okinawa and mainland Japan, but those are all copper, CAT-6, run by Yahoo! BB (SoftBank). They offer(ed) 8mbps/1mbps, 12mbps/1mbps, and 50mbps/3mbps for under $50 a month. The next step in Japan is 100mbps fiber, but it isn't avaliable everywhere. I lived a couple of blocks too far to get it cheaply in Okinawa... Apart from that, I know of at least one person who resold bandwidth on Okinawa and made a phat living off of it, but I never meet him or learned what he was doing. That was heresay from some of my friends.

Anyways, I don't think you could touch a 50mbps connection in the USA for ~$50 a month. Although when you start to consider classic TCP/IP in high latency environments (anything around the world and above or around 300KB/s) it hits a ceiling. This is where Internet2 has done away with old things to speed it up. Why wait for confirmation if you aren't even filling up the pipe and can keep sending? Full throttle ahead! (Granted, I haven't read into what Internet2 changed)

Only a couple of blocks and you didn't move?! I would have... but then again..
One of the deciding factors on which apartment I'm moving into is if they allow me to get either DSL or Cable... seems I might not need either... there are scores of unprotected WAPs that show up during a short "drive bys"...
