From what I've seen it's a nightmare making the drivers work on ATI. Nvidia however supports Free BSD and Linux with a driver they make and it allows complete 3d support.

I don't care what the Xeon has for competition, I said I'd rather have one than something else. ATI can be as fast as it wants, but when I do an update on SUSE and it grabs Nvidia drivers for me, and they actually work and build a Kernel for me, then I'm not switching to ATI so I can play UT 12 frames faster. If it doesn't lag, I'm happy, I don't really care how many frames it is.
Yep, I certainly agree with the two things you point out.
I have also good experience with the Nvidia chipsets on Linux. And indeed it isn't that important to get those extra frame rates... I also don't realy care as long as it does'nt lag.
I'm also using Nvidia boards, only pointing out that in recent comparisons the ATI was a little better.

About the Xeon, ok, but I still believe that you can not compare apples with oranges

Heh, I just always have wanted to have A Xeon box. From what I hear, it runs nice and cool, and still has that speed. Very ideal for someone like me who hates warmth in the box. That is my only problem with AMD, the heat.

How hot are your AMD and Intel boxes running Gore? (Just curious, as I dont see much of a difference in heat here at the office between AMD and Intel boxes with similar heatsinks)

If you want some awesome cheap Xeon goodness, this deal would have been one to check out about 2 months ago. Deal - http://www.pcsurplusonline.com/ViewProd.cfm?ID=4494

Unfortunately now, they are out of stock and they will probably never have it in-stock again.

But I'm happy with my cheap AthlonXP-M goodness. Unfortunately, it has recently become more expensive to go the route I did, so I hopped onboard just in time
