i dont buy it either. smells a little "fishy".

but - what if it's hacking for penetration testing purposes?

    Perhaps it works like this..

Apply & get asked for an interview.

We are looking for really god hackers, are you any good.

    Yeah , sure , I'm leet.

Really, can you back that up. What have you hacked?

I've downloaded credit card data from city bank and defaced SCO website.

    Excellent, you are under arrest...

    Steve
I would believe that that would be illegal in the US cuz isn’t that entrapment.

No. They did not say "Go hack this and prove it."

But still it might be viewed as it because what they would be saying is tell me what you have done and i will give you a job doing it for us, so isn't that like telling a defendant if he pleads guilty he will get a lesser sentence but then giving he the max.

    Keezel has a good point:

Cops hate working w/ "civilians" and I doubt they would be too thrilled about working with (and paying) a self proclaimed criminal
The only exception that I can think of is fraud. The cops like working with the company's auditors because they get the manpower and expertise, and the "victim" is paying for it, as the auditors are technically "officers" of the company.

In this case I would have thought that the cops and the DA/Crown Prosecutor would be very reluctant in case this self-styled skiddie corrupted the evidence?

Financial records are pretty robust, whereas computer evidence is more like forensics...........easily damaged or contaminated.

    just my thoughts
