For the non-informed: Hoss (with an Umlaut on the o) was the SS-officer who "invented" that text ("Arbeit macht frei" - "Work liberates" - originally for Auschwitz, later adapted for Dachau and the other ones)... I guess it was his way to tell the world that he wanted to be known as the greatest mass murderer of all times (with 2 million+ murders on his name... that's what he himself claimed).
