If he had physical access it's very possible he used something like a knoppix disk or NT Offline Password.

As far as i know, no knoppix disks were used, or any boot disks at all.

Hitting "ENTER" when asked for the password? Seriously, there's no way to get into the system without knowing a password for an account with admin privs this way. Does he have his own account? Do you have an account? Are all accounts password protected? Are the passwords easily guessible?

I think that you are getting a little confused here? strictly speaking Windows 2000 does not have a "DOS" mode. If you hit F8 during start up you can go into "safe mode with command prompt"

If your security is set up right it should then prompt you for a user ID and a password. You can then run the cmd.exe program.

I think that SirDice and MsM may have the answer, or even yourself when you mentioned password recovery disks.
