death when respiration and other reflexes are absent; consciousness is gone; organs can be removed for transplantation before the heartbeat stops. Not the case.
Well brain death is a general term but if you want to get all techie then consider that as a bunch of rubish. You can lose all sense of perception and thought and still breath on your own. Like a worm or single cell animal acting on predetermined course via DNA. The bain nothing more than a few explicit instruction to regulate metabolism and take in energy. There are multiple layers in the brain and depending on what is killed off or destroyed depends on the state of being. We toss around Persistent Vegetative State with her, or more accurately Cortical Death where the Cerebral Cortex is non-funtioning or severely reduced. It could be completely killed or multiple layers killed reducing funtionality as death of cells penetrate ordered funtion.

Comparing a mentally retarded person being left in the desert to cortical death is condeming something all right: science and rational thought. But for the record I could have gone either way if Mr. Schiavo would have given up custody to her, that's fine... but he decided his wife's fate and if that were my wife I would have done the same thing. And if her parents fought me I would have taken the same course. Hell all those condeming him would, Rush... Shawn... Mike Savage and all the others on the radio . But since there is doubt with the lack of a written will they condemn the decision of a husband even though court after court and medical panel after medical panel agree on cortical death.

Almost forgot; The state does not recognize cortical death as brain death, Rust you are right. Thus the condition we are in with these battles of someone breathing with no consiousness. Much like an amoeba. From a religious standpoint some determine death by the ability of a person to "picture" god. Would she have been alive form that point of view?

To me it's not a question of whether she was considered alive or dead...as my opinions on death are the same as life...it simply is a question of what life...

assume for a moment you are a healthy person...not disabled in any way...placed in an acrylic box the size of her bed and sealed to spend the rest of your days...placed upon the side of a mountain for a veiw...if I came across you I would look around and then push you off the mountain and wouldn't feel the least bit guilty about it.

no one deserves to live their life in a box!

From the UDDA (Uniform Declaration of Death Act):
An individual who has sustained either 1) irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions, or 2) irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem, is dead. A determination of death must be made in accordance with accepted medical standards."
Teri's case seems to be borderline, since her higher brain functions all were dead (cerebral cortex included) - the only thing still functioning was the base of her brain which controls bodily functions.

Here's an interesting article that takes both points into consideration: http://ww2.wcnc.com/Global/story.asp?S=3121668

Last thing I will state about this - then I am done on this issue... for now. Did anyone else catch the "Southpark" episode last night. [SARCASM]Glad they decided to show some class, tact and dignity with the Schiavo affair[/SARCASM]. Yeah - I know what to expect - at least most of the time - but still - yeesh!

Ok - the parts when the Archangel Michael was drawing on the whiteboard... then sniffing the marker... that was funny, but that's it! Ok and Cartman acting like Gollum when he was going to inherit the Sony PSP, but that's it!

Also - on the Schiavo case(s) - I think the media coverage will go on-on-and-on for another 3-6 months, with more Government becoming a part of our lives, and more living wills being created. And that now Terri Schiavo is at rest and peace.

    And... I'm done.

I would hope if you came along and found me alive and healthy in an acrylic box on the side of a mountain that you would grab a rock and bust open the box and let me out!

To my knowledge there is not a country in the world that treats Cortical Death as "real" death. In these cases persons enter a coma but then come out of it and reach a state of being "awake." Like you insinutate Negative.. Death does not apply, in the United States or anywhere that I can think of. It's borderline. In this case there is no cessation of the entire brain or brain stem. Thus the debate. Interesting link and Mathgirl is right, bust me out! lol.

Now that she is gone, I hope her family can take comfort in the God they believe in, and move on with their lives. If nothing else, according to their religious beliefs, she is now healthy and happy. I heard their press conference this afternoon, and I was moved by their statements, especially the one reminding parents to spend time with their children and remember that time with them is a gift.

If I was stupid enough to let someone lock me in an acrylic box and leave me on the top of a cliff, I deserve to be pushed off, healthy or not.

As for Terri, my prayers go out to her and her family this evening, along with the taking of comfort that she is no longer suffering.
