the southern Irish claimed neutrality to show their independance from Britian - but even tho publicly they were neutral they still provided assistance.
Allied pilots who were downed in Southern Ireland were patched up and returned to carry on fighting. German pilots were detained and not released until the war had ended. Also during the blitz on northern ireland the south also sent additional fire crews, trucks and equipment to help.
were as the north as part of the UK fought in the war - and as I mentioned in my first post it was 'Ulster' (the Northern Part of Ireland) in which every fmaily lost 1 male relative.
If you are interested in just how much of a part was played by Ulster soldiers in the war maybe you should read up on the battle of the somme

I dont care that America came in late - they were on the other side of the world...why would they care. What I dont like is Americans attempting to make the world gratefull for their assistance which yes probably ended the war slightly (not a hell of alot) quicker than it would ahve without them. But which was in the measure of things pretty pathetic.
Its like someone going to buy a house and being 10pence short. So you give him the 10pence - do you spend the rest of your life pointing at the house and shouting to the guy "hey without me you couldn't have bought that" yes you made a contribution but you're also blowing it out of all proportion.
And if you want to go ahead and make the whole joke of "do you speak german? no? your welcome!" go for it - I'm Irish and I lived in America....i never once met an american - the only people I seemed to meet claimed to be irish ("yeah my great great great great great grandads, sisters, unkles, girlfriends, sisters, friends, fathers, brothers, wifes, grandmothers, dog was Irish - so Im Irish too!" type people) so my response as an Irishman has to be......
Do you have a culture and a heritage? You do!......you're welcome
err was that directed at me?
I pointed out that America was commited to helping her Allies well before we declared war on Germany. I never once said anything about the world being grateful to me, or America, because we came to help our friends and bretheren in need. I was attempting to show that America did indeed help her European cousins out BEFORE we declared war. I did /not/ once say they owed us something for it, nor did I even allude to that.
I'm of Irish (and English) descent, but I am most certainly American... so there, you have met one now.
So what was the point of your rant? I posted a funny, at least to me, IRC type chat about WWII and online gamers. I get pinged for it not being "historically" accurate... this /is/ the Tech Humor section is it not... and now I get grief about ugly Americans? yeesh.
I try to share humor and I get grief, go figure.
