mathgirl32: DId soem digging, seems the supposed ban is just a urban legend...its not happpening except inside the mind of some far right nutters trying to spread fear. look christians make up the vast majority of this country why would we persecute our selves? Makes for great copy though...and while some stores say happy hollidays, well that is jsut as traditional as mary christmas for this time of year.

now for a fun fact, christams was considered a british holliday and wasn't celebrated in the US largly until the civil war era...during the articals of confederation era a lot of states fined you if you tried to celbrate christams....so anyone tryign to remove the celbration of christams isn't goign agenst the founders of this country but along with them. You Xmas celbraters are just unpatriotic

    from the history chanal
"After the American Revolution, English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas. In fact, Congress was in session on December 25, 1789, the first Christmas under America's new constitution. Christmas wasn't declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870. "

I know boston fined people for celbrating christams for a while haven't found good sites for this yet.

    Hey BBallad,

Do you have a link disproving the claims of the AFA?
    http://www.afa.net/christmasban.asp

Not trying to be a smart alex or anything here. I really interested in looking at the whole picture before I sign a petition or make a decision about boycotting a retailer.

    Thanks
The mentally handicaped are persecuted in this great country, and I say rightfully so! These people are NUTS!!!!

I think the AFA is seeing ghosts...
Just take a look at their "research" (http://www.afa.net/christmasban.asp). There is no ban against the use of the word "Christmas" - there simply is a preference to use "holidays".

Maybe next year we'll see a campaign that demands that Walmart uses the word "daffodil" in its advertizing... if not, I'll have to start a petition for the support of daffodils worldwide who are being neglected by big evil corporations...

    From the AFA site
Kmart promotes a "Holiday Sale" on their website. Links to the trees webpage asks if you "Need it by Christmas," but refers you to its "Holiday Shipping Dates" section.
That's because they ARE HOLIDAY shipping dates, silly! If you need it by the 25th (Christmas), they offer HOLIDAY shipping dates (hence the plural: those dates are not-christmas dates)... jeez...

    From the AFA site
Office Max offers no "Christmas" in their advertising.
That's because they're an OFFICE SUPPLY store, not a reindeer breeder...

From the AFA site about Staples
In searching for "Christmas" on their website, results show only three matches. Staples ads avoid using "Christmas."
    *whisper* Office supplies */whisper*
They happen to sell 3 christmas items - that could explain the search result...

    From the AFA site
Best Buy offers no "Christmas" in their advertising.
Good. Christmas shouldn't be for sale anyway

    Ack Phttt!

    "Roses are reddish
    Violets are blueish
    If it weren't for Christmas
    We'd all be Jewish"

I really cannot see Christmas as a "British" festival?............ah I do now.........GOD is an Englishman and all you traitors will be made to pay for 1776?

Merry Christmas to you all (we are in the second week of Advent?)

You can't honestly think these people (myself included) cannot discern the difference between the normal use of "holiday" to include Christmas and New Years, and the blatent omition of the word Christmas in cases where in the past, before this country became pussy-whooped, nearly every store would have proudly displayed the word.

Ah! I'm with you on the issue itself... it's almost a crime to say the word nowadays...

BUT... there is a huge difference between "not being for something" and "being against it" - applied to this case, that reads: there is a huge difference between "not mentioning christmas" and being "anti-Christian"...
And calling for a boycot of a retailer that reasons that "Holiday season" is more appropriate than "Christmas season" is absolutely retarded. Last year, it was "boycott Target because they are French!", this year it's "boycott Target because they ban the word christmas"? What's next? "Boycott Target because it starts with the letter T"?

Calling a christmas tree a "holiday tree" is retarded, no doubt about it. But boycotting an office equipment company because they "only" have three "christmas" references on their web site? Because they call December "the holiday season"?

The AFA's "Super Store" sure covered themselves well... gotta give it to them... they have 999 results for "christmas" on their site... way to go! (http://shop1.americanfamilysuperstore.net/e/default.asp)

BUT... ONLY ONE reference to "daffodils"...I'll have to boycott them...

The fight is a good one... the outlet sucks :/

Sorry, but I missed the part where I was promoting the AFA. Where was that? I'm neither promoting nor... well....not promoting the AFA. I was advocating an attempt to do something about the increasingly PC verbiage that some retailers are using.

So *you* don't like the messenger....I never said I was crazy about the messenger, in fact, at work I mentioned to somone that I wasn't crazy about the messenger. Do I want to sit on my ass and watch the rest of what's left of this country, that hasn't been bull-dozed by the PC movement and pussies alike, be flushed down the toilet???? No!

The point...is not the messenger! You can argue about the messenger all day. But then you missed the point.

    Lol... I said

    ...
I prefer to sit on my ass and blame the messenger, yes . When a messenger shows up with a message that makes sense, that's when I'll sign a petition to support its message... to sign a boycott against someone else, the messenger will have to convince me that the to-be-boycotted entity isn't on my list of frequently-visited stores
