Hi codenamevirus, Here are few things that I know, to do and to not for ranking higher on a SE.

    Things to do:
    1. Use keywords that are most relevent to the content of the page. Use Keyword Analysis Tool if you need help.

    2. Your description should focus on your site's main topic and not generalise. Make sure you include your most important keywords towards the beginning of your description.

    3. Page title must contain the "Your comany name" or "Website name" or "Your name" or what ever the site is about.

    4. Always use "Alt" tags to keyphrase the image and "Title" tags to links. For eg, <img src="./picnic.gif" alt="Enjoying picnic at the river side" /> and <a href="./contact.htm" title="Contact us for more information">Contact</a>

    5. Maximise use of <h1-6>, <em>, <blockquote>, <strong>, and other important tags. I heard somewhere that using more that one <h1> tags hurts the ranking but I am not sure.

    Never:
    1. Use keywords that are no where in the page.

    2. Use generalised description like, "Best website in the world", "Best <your product name here> makers in <your country here>", etc

    3. Use text colour as background colour to hide text to increase keyword density. You will be penelised by the search engine and it will never index your website either permanently or temporarily.
There are many other things not do.
