If you only have the services you need running and locked down, no you do not need a firewall.

no you do not need a firewall.
WHAT!!!!
What operating system are you running...obviously some kinda windows
XP has a built in firewall...I suggest you use it.
Also make sure you get all your updates...from all your software...regularly
I also like to use a router firewall....keeps most of the noise out...frees up resources on the computer
MHO...of course

...but it wouldn't hurt to have one. Might I suggest (if you are running XP) turning the Window's Firewall on or possibly downloading ZoneAlarm?
Although d0pp is right in his statement, it never hurts to have just a little more for the services you don't know are running. You might be suprised.

Actually, no, d0pp is right - if you properly lock down your system you can skip the firewall...
But.... If you do decide to use a firewall, I recommend hardware based as opposed to software based....

Well I beg to differ...
.Locking down the system...do you have an outline for that...cause I would love to read it.
As for hardware vs software firewall...

There is no such thing as a hardware firewall.

There is no such thing as a hardware firewall.
Depends on the definition of words. Ultimately, it is software.
A "hardware firewall" runs on a different box from your workstation.
One of those nice little linksys routers should be sufficient for
a home user.
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

Morgan: Try the NSA Guides. They're pretty good. And yes, you can protect a system without a firewall.
The terminology of software/hardware firewall is more of which device does the processing to determine safe traffic versus malicious traffic. Traditional view of software firewalls should be referred to as host-based versus server based. Alternate ones would be network-device based ones (sometimes referred to as hardware based). A computer firewall (not be confused with a physical building firewall) is still software -- the question is where it is installed.
