    Let me see....

You installed LAN Chat software on a computer that doesn't belong to you, that has some restrictions in place to prevent you easily installing software that the administrator doesn't want you installing and you circumvented those restrictions in order to do so. Not only have you done this to your computer but you have either done it to other computers too or you have encouraged others to act similarly.

Nice... On my network you just carried out malicious activity and your a$$ would be bouncing down the street as I type this.

Silly question... This is a LAN... A LAN is a _Local_ Area Network. Are you so frigging lazy as not to be able to walk down the corridor to chat with someone face to face?

Sillier question... You have this nice little network with a nice little administrator to run it for you... But you don't have a frigging phone?????

Last dumb question... Did you write this LAN Chat software? I thought not... This means you can't trust it... and this is _exactly_ why your admin has put restrictions in place to try to stop you installing crap the s/he doesn't trust... But that never occurred to you did it... That's _why_ your company employs the administrator... Because s/he knows _way_ more about this stuff than you!!!!
Don\'t SYN us.... We\'ll SYN you.....

    Hi Tiger Shark

    That was a good reply.

All you said is of course right, but let me ask you something, when i am so busy with my work will it be possible to go and talk to friend of mine who is sitting some 10 meters away? Yes i can, i can go and talk to her/him as you said, but think of a situation when the work is too hard and the guy/girl sitting away is also busy then what i ll do is to call him in cell phone. Since i cant recharge my cell very often i came up with idea of installing a LAN CHAT, but though this thread i came to know that all the guys over there or who are responding never like to do anything wrong in the network rather "just sit and do you work" like response is what i am getting. Since I like to think positive, walk positive and do positive things, why not i get something positive from you guys/gals over there. Am i Right ??

I just want some help regarding the LAN CHAT.

For the latest update of my system. The admin has also deleted net send option and what i have is this small little cute lanchat, but chatting with this may be crucial for us since the risk of admin getting the list of new installs and then finally confirming a MEMO from the adminstrative office. So what should do to avoid all these awesome proccess.

    Hi preacherman481

Of course we cannot rule out that situation when my boss calling me and saying something that both me and BOXS dont like, but think of the situation, we are doing something for the firm itself. We are trying to bring something new through which we can chat with limited members only. We have an option in our system that i forgot to mention. We have something called Telnet. How far can i use this option if i know the LAN addressess of my friends system. I can open telnet by just typing telnet at the command prompt, but dont know how to connect to others. When i type telnet some white window will come and on the top right an option is there saying connect. So i try to connect with an Local ip address, but it will ask for host name, port, term type. What is all these things. Will i be able to connect to connect to another system through filling up all the detalis in this "form"??

A fine example of the greatest security threat we face today.

I think you're going about this in the wrong way. You should never ask, "Will I get caught", because that implies you are doing something you are not supposed to. Your employer should want to provide you with the most useful tools available. If you need a chat program for internal traffic then they should provide it for you. There should be a balance between security and usability.

If you don't have this feature and need it, instead of trying to get around the security controls, work with them. Tell management about your problems and how it effects your job. Tell them how much more productive you will be with this feature. Lastly, if they choose not to give you this function, then live without it. You can only be as productive as management allows you to be. I'm not saying use it as a crutch to blame things on, but if management knowingly forces you to work with a productivity loss, then this is their choice and must accept it.

Don't take matters into your own hands, that is just asking to get yourself a one way ticket out of a job.

The bottom line is that if you are sending information from your computer to another computer on the network it is possible and probable (if the admin is worth a damn) that you will get caught. A good admin should be on the look out for unusual trafic that may possible indicate a security compromise or worm type activity and such. And once suspicious activity is found it can and will be traced back to your workstation.

Onto the subject of telnet. Yes is you give all of the information on the proper screens it will give you acsess to another machine. But it wont further your goal of being able to comunicate with your coworkers. Yet again a case where a good admin is going to nail you to the wall. Unless your job requires you to telnet into other machines the network trafic is going to show a type of trafic that shouldnt be there. Every protocol you use to access a machine via the network leaves a different footprint for lack of better terms. Port numbers packet types so on and so forth. Well in a network where there should be no telnet activity you telneting into a buddys system will stick out like a sore thumb with a bright pink bandage on it.

    Hi ZomBieMann77,

Why we/I require LanMessenger is not only to chat, but also to send files and transferring files is also a major part of our work. So, in this network there are so many transferring happeining and of course all either in .xml or .html format. We a team of 7 are really in need of a method or a software, which allows us to directly access the particular drive of my neighbour or fellow worker. Like, when a friend of mine is busy with his work and when he is so busy that he cant even turn towards me of rather even pick the message send by me, and hence the need of such software or telnetting come in play. When i go and tell the admin regarding this, he will certainly say that, you have one and rest some sweet and calm words according to the situation. We are no masters in networking and hence the network admin is the only BOSS on the entire network. I dont wanna be a Master, but cant i be a master in what am doing. Doin in the sense, I am sending files to my friend or any of my coworker and i am thinking why not we directly access the friends that particular folder and access the file or make a copy of that to one of my folder. Of course security is a big question if i start from accessing and ends in something else, but since we have only limited access or premission I am sure that nothing bad or what we hear is not going to happen. As about telnetting, is there any way to access a particular file, either a xml, or a html file from my friends system.

Suppose I am using HS300 (my system number) and my friend HS77 then by telnetting i want to access a folder named "C:\HS\xmldoc\100n8vqr.xml" then with the allowed resources or premissions will I be able to connect to that particular folder to access that file or make of that file in my same C:\HS\xmldoc\100n8vqr.xml folder. Since we are doin the same project in different machines it is likely that i ll need a file which is partially completed by my friend of the same name and same destination, but in two different system. So what i really need in such a situation is to connect to his C drive and to that particular HS folder and get that file, but i know that when he is doing that pariticular file it is possible to get a cannot move or "copy" error message, but copy is possible. And hence I am happy, my friend is happy, but what about my system administrator. Will he be Happy? That's all i wanna know.

    Hi zENGER,

Of course the management do have a vital role, but management is all there is to pay us and they wont provide us with any new features, we have to dig things out. We will be payed for those that we do and doing happens in a fast and quicker manner when we have the rescources, but waiting for management is like telling a stone to move from its palce. When I reply for the post or replies that I get, I really feel like I will get something from my friends who are really masters. Why we/I really need is for a good reason and this good reason also reflects our pay and management as I have already told is there only to pay us for what we do. It is our reponsibility to do more. For this particular purpose we have to have something which allows us to do more faster works. And hence the need for telnetting or a need for new software arises. Thus my question still keep on draging.

Now I think that I shouldnt have started a thread by the name of ""Will I be Caught"". Now I feel that I am replying for those who are realy worth replying.

    Regards,
    Wiliams Antony.
