My mother-in-law will tell you that she can barely work a cellphone and she is just now getting used to 98. To switch to XP she is going to need a new computer and she will have to relearn a new system which isn't much for some of us but it can be a pain for those not so technically endowed. But I think they are counting on people having to buy new systems and operating systems.

And new versions of m$ office, and new peripheral devices, and new AV, and new software in general...

I still use Windows 98 because I simply can't afford to buy a new computer and all new software. Sure, I might be able to run most of my software in compatibility mode (although I question whether that would work on the bulk of my music software), but not without what I expect (knowing m$) would be an unpleasantly large number of headaches. My music software in particular is totally essential to me and too expensive to replace. When I do buy a new computer, I plan on keeping the old one, doing a format & reinstall of 98, using the new computer for everything else, and running the old 98 computer sans internet connection as long as possible.
