Layer-2 Technologies
Hi
Pardon my ignorance.
I'm reading about the OSI Reference Model.
From what I'm reading Layer-1 is the realm of networking hardware specifications, and is the place where technologies that performs Data Encoding, Signaling, Transmissions and Reception functions reside.
Can someone be able to tell me what are the devices that performs Data Encoding, Signaling functions of the Layer-1? My guess for Transmissions and Reception would be Cables for wired networks and probably Radio Frequencies for wireless. Please correct me if I'm wrong in my guess.
Layer-2: From what I've understood, it has a Logical Link Control, Media Access Control.
Layer-2 provides Data Framing, Hardware Addressing, Error Detection & Handling [CRC].
Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, CDDI, ATM, Frame Relay, ARCNet & 802 Networks are some of the Layer-2 Technologies.
My question is, How can one determine what Layer-2 Technology is being used in a given network?

It's build into your NIC i.e.
Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, CDDI, ATM, Frame Relay, ARCNet & 802 Networks are some of the Layer-2 Technologies.

The (physical) connector type is usually a dead-give-away..
