S/W for using 5.1 speakers with my onboard audio
Hello everyone,
It's been a long time since I last visited AO. My apologies, but last sem at college wasn't exactly fun and am earning a living now and getting much less time to spend online.
My motherboard (Asus A7N8XVM-400) has support for 5.1 speakers and I've got a plugin for winamp that let's me listen to mp3s in 5.1 surround. But it only helps with Winamp and not with other programs.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any software (free or otherwise) which converts any sound in the system into 5.1 sound? The way it works now, Winamp, some games which support 5.1 and a DVD player I downloaded, use all 5 speakers.
Thanks

AFAIK
Unless the format is originally recorded in 5.1
You cannot "convert" it

Edit> clarify.... unless it was originally "Mixed" in the 5.1 format...not recorded
according to the spurts here you can import them using a tool such as Nuendo...which will push it out to all the speakers...but will not be true 5.1 format.

and the spurts here say nothing is free

Well, I really don't need to convert all my mp3s to 5.1. I'd be happy if all 5 speakers were utilised by all the applications instead of just 2, so that it'll sound like the sound is coming from all around.
Sorry, but I didn't mean "convert", I meant I just needed something that will clone the sound coming through 2 speakers (stereo) and produce the same sound through the remaining 3 speakers.
Not sure if that was clear, but I hope you get what I'm trying say.
Thanks .

well...your sound card should do this...no???
check all your options in devices...we use digital sound cards here for testing and have different modes ..depending on the results we want

That's the thing ... the sound card on my mobo just gives me sound from 2 speakers normally. In winamp, it works through all 5, thanks to the plugin.
