Kevin Mitnick was never a hacker, he didn't hack programs, he was known as a cracker, but even then he really didn't crack much, he would be better described as just a Social Engineer type of guy, he had the ability to engineer people into giving him the answers that he wants/wanted.
But even at the end of the day he was and still is not nothing special. He might of been good back in the days, but he used a lot of stuff that was already out there...
It's kind of like saying that Ankit Fadia didn't steal other peoples work, put it all into a book and claim it as he's own, and is actually a uber leet cracker.

You shouldnt believe everything you hear. Was he a hacker? Yes. Im not sure what classifies a *master hacker* however I would assume maybe something like this
. The Department of Justice describes him as "the most wanted computer criminal in United States history." His exploits were detailed in two movies: Freedom Downtime and Takedown.
But I guess
even at the end of the day he was and still is not nothing special.
Let's see how long you can elude from the FBI for. I bet not as long as him. Also, hes a security consultant now with his own security firm. The guy knows his sh1t. If he didnt he obviously wouldnt be in the security field to begin with.
I think there are more jealous people out their and haters who hate on this man. IMO, if you can go on a *coast to coast* hacking spree , elude the FBI for a few years and still being able to breach network security, database security, server secuity and come out of federal PRISON (not state prison) and still open up your own security firm and make a honest living doing something that you love to do you're a bad motherphucker you know it and I know it. Google his ass you might be surprised what you find.

Mitnick was a petty fraudster, and not much more than that. His "skill" was getting caught and imprisoned TWICE for such offences. Skillful criminals always get caught (NOT)?
The Department of Justice describes him as "the most wanted computer criminal in United States history." His exploits were detailed in two movies: Freedom Downtime and Takedown.
Oh yeah! 5 years and 8 months cumulatively?.......... err.......... not so long ago there was this female supply teacher who faced 40 years because of porno pop-ups that appeared on her inadequately protected school-provided Windows 98 box..........
The whole thing is a sick joke, and shows the total ignorance and inadequacy of the authorities. "most wanted computer criminal"........... sure but for that read "the only one we know about"
He simply saw the potential at an earlier stage, and managed to get himself caught, so he was dumber than the people chasing him.
Avoiding the FBI.............. not that difficult? terrorists seem to manage quite well?
Media hype for the most............. anyone asked JP for an interview recently?
Also, hes a security consultant now with his own security firm. The guy knows his sh1t. If he didnt he obviously wouldnt be in the security field to begin with.
Anyone can put a shingle outside their door........... that does not make them what they claim to be. Once a conman always a conman......... only some cons are legal.
This is like the RIAA and MPAA ................... blame the defects of your industry on "file swappers" ................... all those companies who claimed to have lost millions of dollars were actually taking the opportunity to "lose" their budget overruns and marketing shortfalls. Mitnick was a Godsend to them .................. If I didn't disbelieve in conspiracy theories, I would almost think that they paid him to take the rap......... just like that British foreign currency rogue trader a few years back
Mitnick is about as 1337 as this guy:

but small fry by comparison

Well regardless of what various members of the "community" think, Mitnick just the same was talented, I've read a good chunk of his book Art of Deception, and there's a lot of knowledge packed in it. If for nothing else i commend him for not being afraid to give knowledge practical knowledge useable out the book to both the layman and hacker alike.

Independent of the terms you use to describe him, in my opinion he has more skill then most of us will ever have. As you might have guessed, he's kind of my hero,

Speak for yourself kid................ me, i've forgotten more about computers than mitnick will ever know............
He wouldn't have encountered punched cards or tapes........... analogue machines, vacuum drives...... no visual display interfaces...........
He is a petty criminal........... a hero, like Bonnie and Clyde; who appeals to some sort of LUSER mentality..............
OK kid.............. they tell me that WW cyber crime is $13 billion........... the "good guys" don't get caught........
Do we.........?

Hello Alex,
Please go to the front page and look at the upper right quadrant....... look for "site menu".............then select "discussion forums" and after that, select the forum of the topic you think what you want to post belongs in.
Hey, don't worry too much, either it is obvious or it isn't............... and lots of posts for help end up in the wrong forum when we find out what the actual problem was
Us Mods will move things if needed

But regardless of his social eng. skills, he sure got a lot of publicity. With his own wikipedia entry these days. Maybe some of us are jealous?
