Alternatives to reinstall slow XP
i have been running xp as a primary boot up (knoppix as alternative) for 3 years not.
have fw, antivirus, spybot, reg cleaner and use frequently
but she is now being really sluggish, hd noise opening small apps (defrag too) etc
other than frying the partition is there an alternative?

do you keep your AV and antispyware tools updated? You might also try doing a scan disk to make sure that your HD isn't going bad. I had a friend that was complaining of his computer running really slow... it turned out his disk was crapping out...

Well, it sounds like you're doing the regular maintenance. How much memory does the system have? How much are you using and how much do you have available?
How large is your page file? Is it on the system partition?
Have you run ccleaner? Do you have too much starting up?
Have you used the performance monitor to see how the system is handling?
Westin brings up a good point about the HD. I've had it happen way too many times at work. Users would complain of a slow computer. I go check it out and sure enough... very slow. processor and memory resources were fine... testing the disk found all kinds of read write errors.

Quitmzilla is a firefox extension that gives you stats on how long you have quit smoking, how much money you\'ve saved, how much you haven\'t smoked and recent milestones. Very helpful for people who quit smoking and used to smoke at their computers... Helps out with the urges.

How full is the HDD?
Have you installed any new software recently that is hogging your memory.
How much of your pagefile is in use?

thinking
thanks for replys
all av/fw/spy/rootkit/nessus... current and uptodate
i did check the page file and for some reason had it to custom
the memory is 512 on the mobo
but the custom pf was set at min 512 max 1024 which was reasonable no?
but i have put it back to system controls pf now
however pf is on same drive, is it worth puting it onto my second HD
also is there a good app which can scan the HD
did msconfig and not too much at start up
although win.ini had a werid 'anne' line (nother prob?)

I usually use MS Error Checking, it can be found in the tools section of your HD properties. I am sure there are better tools, but this one usually works for me. Usually requires a reboot then runs at startup.
