Internet Accelerators?
On another forum, someone was ranting about this speedconnect XP 6.5 Internet accelerator... I was wondering what you guys thought about these products and if they are okay, which one works the best.
thanks

Hi there
I use Download Accelerator just for the resume the support but I don't think that is speeds up your connection. All a marketing scam in my opinion.
Hope this helps you.

I've always wondered about these products claims.
How would a program like that speed up your connection? Wouldn't the website/server's upload speed remain the same no matter what app you use?
I know that Google's app that prefetches websites makes it appear quicker but it's only because you already have the files on your pc before clicking that link.
Can anybody elaborate on this?

Yep, there is no software means to speed up an internet connection. Better hardware or a better ISP is the only way to go.

Don't some of those programs make registry changes that change your MTU and other network settings? I'm not saying this would work, I just remember a long time ago making changes to my MTU to increase my network bandwidth on an old cable modem provider. (Come to think of it...I never noticed much difference)

Then I guess my next question would be what does everyone think about speedtest.net? because he claims that the program gives substantial increase in download and upload speed! with picture evidence...

Wofman, Yeah some do and they can help SLIGHTLY. The only other thing that can make any difference is a download manager that supports downloads from multiple different servers at the same time. Basically it splits the file into parts and downloads them from different servers at the same time.

Hey oofki, you're not as young as I thought you were.............. Muhahahahahahahahah
Wolfie, you are pretty much spot on (and also not a youngster) ............ back in the days of Win 9x and dial-ups, the default settings in the Windows Registry were not the best for a private 14.4, 28.8 or whatever connection.
These days you are better off spitting your dummy and throwing a hissy fit at your ISP. At worst they should increase the gain on your line, and if you are a mean, nasty, and sarcastic supermoderator type they just change you to a commercial connection but still bill you at the private rate.
Contention is mostly the biggest issue these days?
