I'm pretty late answering ... sorry ... For now, if you need something easier (and free), then I can recommend clonezilla to make a copy of the disk(s) (www.clonezilla.org).
I'll try to make a more thorough answer tomorrow...
Or maybe make a walk through, time permitting.
Back when I was a boy, we carved our own IC's out of wood.

Don't worry.. I'm down in a mess of network **** that i am sure I'll not come out of ages.. one ARP storm took out our entire city wide network..
for first time in my life i'm thinking why i took this server up..
btw,
128 MB was log size.. all filled with failed login attempts..
now when i asked the Administrator(s) .. he said.. and I quote "umm dunno man how someone can try every second"..
ITS CALLED A ****ING BRUTE FORCE IDIOT ! OR A VIRUS !!
