North Korea has been seeing serious problems since the late 1980's, and with the collapse of the PDS in the early-mid-1990's, a famine occurred. The causes of the famine are pretty complex, but the main factor was the end of aid from the collapse of the USSR. Inputs evaporated, and the rest is history. However, looking back even further, DPRK has always been dependent on aid despite the Juche. Juche was formed during the Sino-Soviet dispute, and Kim Il Sung's need to be adulated.

I can go on and on, but the nuke problem is simply a ploy for aid. Lately, this has not been working. So what does Kim do? Go to China to beg for aid, which was not fruitful.

Now a rumored third succession is in the works, but there is little evidence to know where Kim Jong Eun is at, if any at all.
