Thats because people fell awestruck at how completely and utterly *****ing stupid the question was.
People already put their lives on the line of software on a daily basis. And unless there is some robot standing infront of an operating table... then yes, I put my trust in software over the attention span and dumb luck of people any day.

That software was written by people. The question isn't stupid though. I guess you have to watch the DVD to see the tone it was meant in. Basically Marshall Kirk McKusick was in front of an audience, and giving a talk / speech about the very beginning of Multi User systems, but most Unix.
He started off with the Manchester project, and then went into Unix as the main subject. The History of Berkeley is not only interesting, there is an almost "Punk rock!" attitude there.
I mean I'm sure you heard Ogre talk about "Way back in 68', Kent state, was nothing there, so great".... But I think Berkeley had much more interesting "**** authority" going on. I can't put my finger on it, but there's something Punk about BSD.
I compare Music and Computing in my head sometimes, with the reason being "The REAL rebels, are legends, and still valid today" which is a lot like uptime. Well, Unix was a rebel, it was nothing like anything else people had used before. You can say it came from Multics, but that apparently is only half of it.
The Ramones, Johnny Cash, GG, Hank, and the Dead Kennedys are still valid today because they have "staying power" or "uptime" and were the rebels of the time. Unix is the same. That's probably why there used to be a forum called "UnixPunx".
Anyway, the question was asked when Marshal said in the 70s in Germany they were using Unix for that purpose I listed. Someone in the audience asked him if he'd trust BSD for HIS Kidneys, and he asked "If my options were Windows NT or BSD? YOU BET I would!"....
I felt that was interesting. I know if I needed Kidney Dialysis, I'd want MY machine running something that wasn't Windows.
Just to add more Punk to Unix; I said "If the screen turns Blue, so do you!"....
TSOL - Code Blue.... Word play

Hmmmm,
People already put their lives on the line of software on a daily basis.
Air traffic control would be a classic example?

Yea, but there are more out there. I mean that's 50/50 though. Yea, there is software doing that, but as far as I know, those are embedded and not consumer OSs. Most people writing that stuff, aren't thinking "I need to make this look good" They're more thinking "I need to make this stable and not ever go down".
Another would be the Navy, who has machines that do... Well, I don't know every detail but the Navy has Computer operated stuff, and so does most of the Military. Now, I DO know that either Army or Marines, have these Arm band Computers, and those run Unix.
I hate to bring this up.... But yes, in the movie Hackers, the Lights in New York, ARE run on Computer too. Which is weird. Well not really I guess, but it SEEMS weird.
Apps like that would be as simple as possible, and as few lines as possible. You don't want some complex BS telling the other lane they have a green light.

JUST STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT! CAN'T YOU GUYS SEE THAT THIS CONSTANT BICKERING IS TEARING US ALL APART!?! :'(
Common guys, I'm going to have to agree with Snuggles here. Theres no point in continuing bickering about this.
Hey, chill out Snuggles old chap............we haven't had a decent flame war since I can't remember when
And Nihil, I thought you were better than that to be fueling the argument.
I mean if there was a more private place to be arguing, like a more private category for AO members that have been here a while I wouldn't care. But I don't want people to be coming into this community seeing things like this and thinking it's always this way. AO will never grow if we don't become more friendly. If you don't like someone's opinion, you can disagree, but theres no reason for this. I don't think this calls for negging, not like it'd do anything anyway for most of you, but I would appreciate it if this stopped.
And yea, I remember Tiger as a good guy. Too bad he'll probably never be back. You may say I wasn't here long ago enough, but I was here way before I actually joined. I usually just studied posts to learn a thing or two. Didn't feel I could add to the discussions yet.

Over 1100 views and 44 replies. This thread was the most active thing here not involving why AO isn't active in months. Just goes to show you press the right buttons and they will come. Even if it does say "Start" on it.
BTW, who got negged in this? I can check the AP assignments, but I'm not spending two hours to look at every post.

I wasn't saying anyone has gotten negged. Sorry if there was confusion. I meant that I disapprove of this type of thread enough to comment on it, but not enough to neg anyone.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the thread or the contention that a Windows operating system had nothing to do with the accident. In fact a computer had nothing to do with what happened.
Arguments about operating systems and their stability are irrelevant............the point the engineer was trying to make is that there was an underlying culture of "carry on regardless". The computer was just a good example that he happened to be aware of. As MLF said from the start it should not have been left like that. Don't forget that the guy is suing for millions...........he is going to pick on something obvious with plenty of witnesses?
The concreting failed and the BOP failed. They couldn't even get the BOP to work by sending down a robot and using its manual controls.
No computers required, this was bad management pure and simple. They knew the BOP was defective and had been damaged in a previous incident. Halliburton wanted to use 14 centralizers..............BP said 6, which greatly increases the risk of concreting failure.
You could be running any OS on the Planet..................it would have still happened.
Yea, there is software doing that, but as far as I know, those are embedded and not consumer OSs.
I don't know about now but up until recently Heathrow's ATC was run on IBM mainframes using a standard OS to run the tailor made applications.
You are right about military stuff though. That is largely embedded systems because it is about equipment control rather than user applications.

Yea, I kind of pointed out in my very first post that I simply saw humor in "Black Screen" and "Blue Screen" and "Blue Ocean" and "Black Ocean" but that was .... I don't know. I guess no one got it, or, did and didn't say so.
It's still funny to me that a Machine we've all seen turn Blue, turned a Blue Ocean Black. And how of course BSOD used to mean Black Screen.... Like I said, I pointed that out in the first FIRST reply I made.
If someone was so intent on making my joke / word play into something else... Which is what happened basically...I mean, I haven't changed my first post with the joke, and had someone looked at what it actually said, it was fairly clear that I was making a comparison and humor.
When it blew into that, I went with it. There's been countless threads about "MY OS is better than YOUR OS" and no one ever had an issue until 3 people joined who love Windows and can't understand why anyone doesn't, and I don't really care if they don't like MY opinion.
And if they're so wrapped up in defending software that they miss the point, **** em'.
