operating system: windows nt 2000

was working on setting persmissions... u know different users, permissions on folders and stuff... read,write,full control.... easy... that is not the question

i was thinking if i can do hardware permissions for users while working on nt2000

if a drive is disabled it is for all the users

then i tried to come up with a way
tried with the floppy
on a certain user went to winnt->system32->dirvers -> floppy.sys

i gave the user no permission to read, to write or to do anything
the floppy still was in use

i removed the .sys from the drivers folder
floppy does not work

in theory i think the method i tried to do should have worked... but did not

so what happened
what is the difference between a file that is not there and a file that i don' have the right to read write or do anything?
NB: after applying the new permissions i logged off in case to make sure

does win nt 2000 only check if the file is there..

is there any way around to give hardware permissions to users using win nt 2000
what abut other ways, with other operating systems

You can hide drives from users in the group policy of an AD domain but I don't think you can do it on a standalone machine.... But then it's 6:00am and I may just be having a senior moment.

to be totaly honest your are going the wrong way about it. The file in question is loaded into memory by the system when you boot. If you want to stop certain users from having access to the disk drvie you can either use the local security settings from the control panel of you can modify the registry(this is dangerous and could totaly block your computer so only do it if you feel comfortable with what you are doing). below are two links to microsoft which explain the different options.

The file in question is loaded into memory by the system when you boot

if u delete the file in question... u can't access the floppy... it says insert floppy drive..
i did not restart or anything... so there must be something other then the boot

i know i can do it using the registry...
but i was thinking of something else

and my intrest is to do it for certain users.. not all of them
i don't believe microsoft does not have that feature
this must be a basic feature
what abut xp.. does anyone know if there is something close to that

That is what the security policies are for in xp and windows 2000. You cab either grant access to a single user or a group of users.

but i don't see how they can help me setting hardware permissions

question: is the subject clear, or u are not getting my point?
should i explain more, or there is no such thing in windows all versions

Simply put you want to stop certain users from haveing access to the disk drive while leaving it active for others. If this is not what you want to do I totaly misread your question.

you need to set the users rights, make a new group and in that group you can add or delete premissions there then add the user to that new group and remove all other groups. http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBH/TIP3500/rh3507.htm
