Not being a senior member here, I may be out of line but I believe most of the seniors will back this post.

First of all, welcome to Antionline.

Antionline is a forum for discussion of technical security issues.

Most of the regular contributors here concentrate on the practice of PREVENTING hackers from entering your system and doing damage, not hacking into others.

If you ask questions like, "How do I hack into my schools computer" or "How do I hack into Hotmail", you will most likely receive a "Negative" response.

If you came here to learn how to hurt other people or to engage in illegal activities, don't expect a lot of help.

If you must be malicious, go here (http://warex.box.sk/howto/netbioshack.htm) and follow the instructions. Then go here (http://www.bo2k.com/) and learn about trojans. You'll be reformatting someones drive by nightfall.

That's it. Unless you are willing to spend a lot of time reading and learning, your hacking abilities are going to end there.

On the other hand, if you are willing to spend some time and put forth an effort to learn, you will find this a very helpful and friendly site.

For starters, here are a couple tutorials:

The Happy Hacker (http://www.happyhacker.org/gtmhh/index.shtml) provides some entertaining and easy to understand information.

Here (http://home.cyberarmy.com/tcu/dv.html) is another nice tutorial called Digital Voodoo

There have been some excellent posts made here by some of the members. If you have a specific question, go here (http://www.antionline.com/search.php?s=) to search the forums. Your question may have already been answered before.

Most of all, enjoy yourself and remember.... hacking is not about hurting other people or destroying someones data. It's about the computer, how it works and why it does the things that it does.

The computer is a miracle of the modern age. A blessing that should be treated as such. A hobby that will never end and can provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment.

Enter the computer with patience and understanding and it will return the same. Enter with evil and deception and you will eventually receive your just reward. If you don't feel this way, I believe you may be at the wrong site.

Anyway, welcome to Antionline and welcome to the world of computers. I hope they are both as rewarding to you as they have been for me.

One of the keys to understanding hacking is to understand the way computers communicate with each other.

Most computers use the TCP/IP protocol.

Here (http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~radionet/nuc1996/ref/tcpip/) is an Introduction to the TCP/IP protocols.

It is written in easy-to-understand language and provides a basic understanding of what TCP/IP is and what it does.

When you are finished reading, go here (http://www.teststeststests.com/tcpip.htm)and take the Microsoft TCP/IP Test.

"Most of the regular contributors here concentrate on the practice of PREVENTING hackers from entering your system and doing damage, not hacking into others."

To prevent 'crackers' from getting access to peoples computers, one should study their methods and talk about it with others who have the same interest. I look at it this way: if the are serious enough, they going to find it out anway.

The only way the internet will become secure is when 'Hackers' are producing the cracks first. Instead of waiting for the 'Crackers' to do it then we figure out how to stop it.

- Just my 2 cents..

Kapperdog I am just a newbie here and have no great wisdom to share just baby stuff that I learned doing my CompTIA course for hardware and what I learn as I self study for my MCSE but this much I am smart enough to know..

Your post was fantastic and I think If I shut my mouth (or keyboard fingers as the case may be) and Open my ears (or eyes for here) I will learn alot about ethical use of information.

True, as the evolution of exploits and fixes go, exploits are a step ahead, since you can't defend against something that doesn't exist...

What you have to do is make it so people won't want to crack into things. Our society is structed around making punishments, to prevent crimes, however... is there anything besides punishments that we can do? We can't teach intelligence or ethics, so that's probably out. (At any rate, we haven't had much luck.)

SixNine
October 10th, 2001, 10:15 AM
Thats the entire problem! The internet goes beyond the scope of a goverment. The threat of punishment can only reduce domestic attacks. A huge amount of crackers come from anti-american goverments who we do not have the ability to punish.

In short the only way we can secure the internet, at least for americans, is to shift into a offensive mood. In other words we figure out our problems before our enemys do. It would be best for the USA's goverment to support a program to do this. But they will sit on their ass until something major happens :/
The only other way I can think of is to have a private organization to do this. The security of this would have to be intense with very strong encription and recurits would have to be carefully looked over. You could perhaps get fudning from other private sectors in the security world for your information...

This needs to be done bad, I don't sleep well at night knowing that their could be a "Large Scale" attack supported by a goverment or a terrorist organization who could effectively cripple our telecommunications industry and send our encomy into a depression. Open Source thats being pushed in other countries is definitly going to have drastic effects on what we see out of attackers. They will be more educated which will make their attacks more frequent, effective, and the ability to catch them a whole hell of a lot harder.

BTW - Ya know what this board needs?? A programming Forum :p

Nudge.

Not just for Americans, everyone connected has to be a good member of the connected world. Being a good member means, not leaving your servers unpatched, not running services you don't need, having a virus scanner with up-to-date definitions, and using it regularly, simple things that very few people do. People act like the net is the stereo-typical United States suburbia of the 50's, when it is more like being a part of one big city, if you leave your doors unlocked, someone will get in. It doesn't mean that if you lock the doors someone won't get in, but atleast it will slow them down.

Sad, I was browsing my schools network, found root level shares, unpassword protected, with read/write on them, it is things like this that are just plain bad, I went to fix a computer that had been infected with nimda, and the definitions file was from 1999!

before I really start ranting. . .,

Just keeping this thing on top...
But also, newbies (well, what am I to tell someone what to do, but I think most of the people here agree?), you can do some work on your own when trying to solve a problem or looking an answer to a question... With Google (http://www.google.com/) (+ Google Groups Search) you can easily look for any thing that comes on your mind. And when looking for programs, AntiCode (http://anticode.antionline.com/download.php), the file archive of AntiOnline is quite a big. The best firewall (yeah yeah, just IMO, let's not argue with this?) is ZoneAlarm, it's free and you can get it from ZoneLabs (http://www.zonelabs.com/).
AntiOnline is a very pleasant place when you just behave yourself. If you're reading this, you probably are new here, so Welcome! :)

They sure dont.

As for Welles, he was considered a liability when they were filming The Third man, but god damn did he save it.

The greatest scene I ever witnessed in a film is a weary Harry Lime, his fingers reaching through the shore towards the moonlight from the sewerage below.
Now thats film making at its finest.

Ok im ramberling now and there is alot more for me to learn and stuff so back to quenching my thirst and desire and hopefull one day i will be able to add some usefull input.

This thread is perfect for the first time AO user, so therefore... why not, instead of just being a thread that someone has to search for, it could be instead a permanent link up on the AO website? In big bold letters:

NEW TO AO? READ THIS BEFORE PROCEEDING!

It might just put an end to the ever famous thread, "How Do I hack Yahoo/Hotmail E-mail accounts" and others like it.

Hello everyone.

THIS thread was one of the BEST written threads I have read that meant something and was trying to reach out to the community to let everyone know what AntiOneline is about.

To the person who started this thread, you said a mouth Full and you said it all very well. Thank you for being here for people like me who wish to share their Knowledge on security, software help and computer solutions, Virus protection, as well as many other helping hints and tip that we can get here on AntiOn-Line.

my name is Corynthus, and I have been a internet visitor to AntiOn-Line's web site for some time now, but have just never joined to post in the form area. My first time really here at the web site, I wanted to fight back from those that I thought were trying to attack me and my computer when I was chatting and a HOST on the mIRC Undernet service, yet I did not know how.

I chatted on the mIRC Undernet chat Systems Service and was getting disconnected alot, ICMP bombed and any thing else the
affending user knew they could do to a hopeless newbie such as me. A channel Oporator who is now my best friend , told me about a program called NukeNabber and said to get it for protection. So I set out to find NukeNabber on the web. and
Behold, MSN Search Engine showed me the AntiOn-Line Link and I read the breif information that msn displayed about the web site and I was there in a flash and downloading Nuke Nabber from AntiOn-Line.

Well that was a few years ago.I now know enough about computers , computer security, how to check for open and closed ports on my computers so that others cannot get into my computer, what's the best firewalls or virus software to use on my computer and how to set them up properly, and much much more...

I learned alot of this by visiting AntiO-Line and reading the many useful hints and tips and help forums that are available here.

I am also glad that I decided to not just read and get help from here, but also volunteer my OWN ideas and helpful tips to users who are how I used to be.

for those of you who may be sitting here lurking and reading things on how we try to protect ourselves from ignorant feinds like you who just wish to get into my computer and find all my password or my saved cookie with my credit card number on it,
firstly your just as I said, ignorant, and a fool who will be caught in time and learn your lesson.

I wish to see that form I saw a long time ago on what hacking really means. Perhaps this will sway others from thinking that hacking is meant for bad or being called a hacker will get you a know person and so on as I have heard so many youngsters say...

I am here to learn on computers , security and more and also help others with what I can.I also hope to see more post such as this in this and other areas that will let users know and see how good antiOn-Line an help people with internet and computer and security problems they may need help with and also how good and Lucky we are to have such as place as AntiOnline.

I am new to antionline, and let me say thanks for this post KapperDog. I have seen the GTMHH on HappyHacker, and if you want to learn basics, thats a great link. Its useful from a security point of view because, if you know what people do, you can counter it.

So yeah, I'm a newbie when it comes to most networking/security/hacking issues. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good flavor of Linux that I could use to get familiar with it. I'd like something very versitile and powerful. Preferably with some sort of built-in web server package. I've tried to install Debian Linux to no avail...well that's not true, I had it installed but never could properly configure the X-Windows System for my graphics card (NVIDIA GE 2) and monitor (19" H:75htz V:60htz current settings). If i could get some help maybe with that it'd be nice. Thanks.

i totally agree 100% of what KapperDog trying to
point out... it seems that all wanna be hacker
doesn,t want to learn, all they want to do is ask
stupid questions. to tell you the truth i do ask
stupid question somtime but not that stupid as asking
how do i ask thingie. if you want to learn something
is to ask a valid question and ask politely. it helps
to read a lot. everything that you could get your hands
on.

so appreciate you KapperDog .

I was just thinking, that if this post was kept up on top like the way it is now , then it could give some serious competition to the world's longest thread in the chit-chat section.

start learning shit on your own... dont be afraid to make mistakes and screw something up... you learn the best when you REALLY screw things up and have to fix them yourself... cause thats usual;ly when you figure out how to do wha you wanted to in the first place

This is the thread I first really enjoyed at AO, it was the thread all newbies were directed to. Its a great thread, only its age and Id recommend it for stickie. Kapperdog is still around, I have seen some recent posts by him.

Nostalgic all the same.

*Thread Closed*

I'm closing the thread to prevent people from using it as a spamming spot. Deleting a single post from a 15 page thread is a PITA. Plus, I'd rather keep this thread for what it's for: informing newbies. :)

If you have questions, by all means PM me.
