Yes, it is possible to hack websites. Purpose? I can't think of any other than to be malicious. Yes, it's done mostly by people who don't have a real life. I haven't tried it, but I heard it's very easy to get caught. I wouldn't recomment it, or any other type of destructive hacking.

It is possible to deface websites with ok skills in Unix and Windows security [Unicode is supposed to be the easiest to deface.]
You can use exploits [vulnabilities in the system] to gain access.
Its considered lame by hackers and cool by script kiddies and yes you more than likely will get caught unless you really know what you are doing.
I have attached a text on the subject.

hi friend dark....yes u are right websites can be hacked...
some of them hack websites just to satisfy their soul that they can penetrate into it..and they become happy..but they don't harm the site.
while many hack the site only because it is a good piece of code..and just for fun , but they damage the site. one should not do this because making is difficult but killing is easy...
so pls don't do it those who all know.... how to ????
keep good thoughts...as they are key to knowlege...

websites can be hacked and the can be cracked
Hacking a website means taking its domain and if one want he/she can upload his website there or any banner.
While cracker is done on those sites which normally have members login area, cracking is usually done on all X websites, u can find lots of tools for this teachnique.
Abt. hacking a website u don't need any tool which i have learn from a tutorial, it require only a email remailer or email bomber nothing else rest is quite easy , i have personally try that on my own company website and it works.

WTF? To crack or hack a website you need a email bomber?
There are tools for the IIS bug [Unicode]
Go to www.google.com and type in IIStorm or uniExploiter. Im no cracker but I have tested a site running IIS 4 on Windows 98 and been able to deface the page but refrained from doing so.
Most exploits are in the C/C++ programming language and most sites are running on Unix based OS these days.

I think I have a web password cracker somewhere. Since you say it's for learning purposes, I am willing to give it to you. I haven't ever used it, so I don't know if it works or not. If I give this to you, I expect you to use it FOR LEARNING PURPOSES ONLY. That means no hacking other people's websites. Talk to me if you want it. Remember, for learning purposes only.

Not unless youre cracking a server running a Unix based Os that is exploitable to a vulnability.
Anyway Im not sure what youre trying to hack here is a free web hosting when all you need is a password to get privileges or a real site that hosts itself.
More info plz and I can help more.
I hope this is not for destructive measures that is so lame.

Oki....!
I have the IIstorm and need a good tutorial for that program and it is for learning purposel only becouse if I learn how defacing is working I will also learn how protection works.....!
So itīs not about hacking NASAS site and put some lame words there.......! And If I hack for an exemple Altavista.se or just have the access to the Index file I would be happy......!
I DONīT WANT TO DO ANY HARM......
:)
The info.....!
What I understand the IIS servers is a good start to hack for a newbie like me becouse u donīt need any programing skills at all just a FTP server and a Index.html file that can be uploaded.....!
But here comes the tricky part of all this.....!
To upload the index file I need access to the FTP -server they use at the ISP and I need thirst of all hack the server where I can take a look around see if can find my friends index.html site......!
When I did a Unicode check with IIstorm on altavista.se there was a bug in code. How do I continue when I have that information in my hands.....!
The server is open for defacing but i still need those magical letters to have access to Altavistas FTP.....!
If I have wrong please tell me......!
But the most inportent thing is that I would like to have an really really really really good tutorial for IIstorm......!

Actullay i have learned it from someone, i cann't find the tutorial that she gave me , but i know who to do this(hacked via email bomber). But there is something worng now abt. this method :(
For hacking a website via email bomber or anonymous remailer, u need one of these software only. The other things that is required is accessing to site
www.networksolutions.com
This site has been moved and totally changed the technique via one can hacked into websites by the help of this site is now not applicable , since networksolution is now changed to Verisign u must have heard this name .
You can simply say that this technique is now been outdated im still researching on the site cause the links and the methods have been changed totally , just wait for a while i will get something out of it.
One thing more networksolutions.com have changed there layout due to my mistake .

Well, I guess you'll have to do it on your own, this time.
One thing more networksolutions.com have changed there layout due to my mistake .
Huh? So you screwed networksolutions.com, and because of that they changed their layout? Or am I missing something here?
Well, maybe you mailbombed them with messages saying 'Your layout sucks! Change it... now!', and they got so scared they changed their layout.

Don't screw it this time!!! VeriSign can't afford another layout!
But do hurry, please. I bet we're all very curious to see how you're going to hack a site by mailbombing it.

DarkLan hacking websites is illegal my freind, if it's just for learning purposes and to learn how the hacks are conducted great for you,
but from the sound of things thats not the only reason you want info, hacking websites can be easy and damn-near impossible it all depends on how the website is setup what software its running APACHE for unix ISS for Micro$oft systems and also depending on how savvy the administrator is.

of course its possible, nothing is impossible in this world, (apprently)
You only need to look at the defaced websites over at attrition.org to see some examples,
theres no point to it really, I supppose it could be used as the starting point of a bigger hack but theres usually better ways to do that.
Why dont you get another computer, a nic and a piece of crossover. Install apache on it (free) set up a website then try attacking that, its better cos its not illegal, you can increase the secuirty to make it harder for ur self, and u wont end up breaking rocks and sharing a cell with a 300lb monster called bubba who just wants to be ur "special" friend
Youll learn allot about security and admin this way,

i2c has got a good point there.
Me and a mate did this, well instead we hooked up a computer at my grandparents house, and we would break into the website with our own computers.
This was the easiest way to learn,.
Even though we had to reinstall everything a few times a week, that was not the point, we were interested in learning something, and we saved up the cash and brought a cheap box, set it up and off we went.
The computer is still up and running to this day and that was like 3 years ago.
Now it's just used to store files and programs.
Anyhow the point is if you really want to learn about that sort of stuff, then i sugest you invest in a cheap computer and practice what you are trying to learn...
Anyhow cheers and there was some good reading in this thread.
Cheers.

yea cheap can mean cheap,
go to a local industrial estate. find out hardware in skips, university skips are good to.
a computer recycling scheme are often willing to sell computers for next to nothing, flea markets and computer fairs
just get the base unit and use your monitor and keyboard a little slower but can save a few quid
relatives and friends can be a good source of used hardware,
