Being a female, I've noticed that they are few and far between in IT.

November 1st, 2001, 01:31 AM
As some of the other women noted, female IT types are far and few between. There are even fewer in the security area. As an instructor, I'm seeing fewer and fewer women getting into networking and/or administrative work. A class I recently started teaching was all guys. And I know that a few had problems at first having a female instructor.
It's a shame. Being a network administrator is fun. It's too bad that more women aren't in this field. You can help people and as a security admin (or in my case, an instructor) help people. ;)

I think there is a fine line between geek and tech jerk..
I'm Tek-Goth.. as I've said b4.. but.. as I feel flirting online is pathetic.. unless.. you know them in person.. and.. even then.. they better like you before you bother them.. Too many techs.. flirt online.. say dumb things.. and try to catch the female IT's eye.. It's really pathetic.. it downgrades your whole online image to some horny teen with bad jokes.. What is flirting online really going to get you? Most likely.. you wont live anywhere near each other.. and they're not going to be into flying down to see some loser from AO.. pic or not... sorry to burst your bubble.. but look from the girls point of view.. Although.. I am male.. I'm trying to give you some advice.. Now.. as far as the goth-tek part goes.. I'm not an introvert to the point where I have no friends... I mostly hang out with girls.. Can't blame me.. and.. while I don't try to get in their pants.. as the saying goes.. Intimacy can develop just because I'm not looking for it.. and they sense that..
They sense EVERYTHING.. shhh.. hold on.. I think they're sensing this... SECURITY BREACHED!

What will you guys do if I give some out? (I rarely use the antipoint functions, though.)
I think there's just this sort of feeling like: "Hey, they're female, *AND* they might laugh at my jokes and understand why I have to change the TCP window size on this network!"
Though I think most people will tend to gravitate towards the worst possible person for them, and most people eventually get lucky and find someone who is compatible on a deeper level...

You know what sucks being a tech guy, at the end of the day (or anytime for that matter), no one wants to here about that program/bug you're working on or that that new firewall/ids box you've just set up is just so paranoid and you think it's cool...
Heck, I can't even talk (with my father who's in comps too) about it at the dinner table without getting "not that boring crap again" looks from my sisters and mother...
Anyways... just had to get that off my chest!

Even when a simple question like 'are there any females here' gets a simple 'yes' answer, would you believe the one posting it without questioning back if their answer is true or not ?
The veil of the unseen makes almost two thirds the revelations of personal aspects suspect. There is much too much going on in the electronic shadows to warrant complete naked trust when someone gives clues about their body's existing state ;)
Curio greets you :)

Well, I'm lucky. My bestfriend, which is a guy, is the one that got me into IT and Security. So, I have him to talk to about all of this. But I totally understand about not having someone to talk to though or boring people. My boyfriend is like "whatever" when I'm trying to tell him about something that I found and I'm all excited about it. He just looks at me like I'm weird. So, he works Shut Downs in Mills, and trys to tell me about his work too, and I'm the same, "whatever". So, we just don't talk about our work to each other. We just say if we had a good day or a bad day, basically. Then we find other things to talk about. But when I get excited about something and need to talk to someone about it, i call my bestfriend. He totally understands. Maybe that's why he doesn't have a girlfriend. He keeps saying that he wants to find someone that is into Computers, a cool chick is what he says. hehe
But that sounds like the best advise, find an IT person and if you think that they are cool date them. Then you'll have someone to talk to.

I've been a female for nearly 22 years... and I've loved every moment of it!!!!! Then again, why shouldn't I? My biggest problem in my last relationship was that my ex was and still is computer illiterate!!!!!! That is frustrating when you are afraid to talk over someone's head and that even if they act interested that they really just want you to shut up. I still keep in touch with two online chat buddies that I used to chat with in highschool over irc. Visited one of them twice and they came to visit me once. Still haven't met my other friend, but I've known both of them for nearly 6 years now.

Most of you probably have already figured this out, but I think the reason there are few women in IT is that unless we have a role model (a male or female relative in IT) it is not normally a field which a lot of women naturally feel drawn to for various reasons.
In my own experience, computers (PCs) were not available to me until I was out of college. I didn't grow up learning how to build things and take them apart. Heck, my husband and father STILL insist on doing any upgrades on MY computers and they aren't exactly proficient at it either. No one took my interest in computers very seriously until I started creating applications and (hesitantly) showing them to consultants at work. Internet has been the most helpful source of help. I have been lucky to find a lot of people, mostly men, who encouraged my learning and pointed me to other resources. I think that is very cool.

Noo! You should've let the thread sink into obscurity... but NOOO... now they'll all be scared away by our confessions of geeky wishful thinking! Gender is (among others) *the* defining role online... the most basic fact we try to ascertain about others, more than age, profession, or race. It must be a 'gender roles' thing...

Hi!
Here's a funny experience I had when I was new in AO. I usually join the AO chatroom and had never told anyone that I was a girl. Thus, most of the guys had assumed that they were talking to a guy. Besides, when I was in the chatroom, no one asked me on gender stuff and I also don't talk about it either. No one new of my real gender and it remained that way for a month, but not for long. Two among the guys, I often talked with, decided to check my profile in the site. To their surprise, I turned out to be a girl. Both said this same line, "Oh you're a girl, thought I was talking to a guy all this time. " From then on, my real gender was revealed. I guess, the guys in the chatroom have assumed me for being a guy, way back then, because of my russian like name :D
Good day to all!

Girls? You mean there are actually girls in here? What was I thinking.
Seriously, I agree with Terr. What difference does it make? If someone knows what they are talking about, it will be obvious. It shouldn't matter if they are male, female, or a trained African Gray Parrot.
Maybe the next topic should be, how many girls have picts in there profile? That way we can be semi-sure of who we are talking to. Except we are not really"talkin" so maybe you can post your phone number and a brief description of the kind of geek you are interested in? Oh wait, this is Antionline, not match.com. Never mind.

As I've found out during my 14 years of computer experience (started when I was 12, now 26) is that the girls/women I've been able to talk to about computers/etc with had to fight rather hard to get where they are now. I know a girl who works at Electronics Boutique who's learned quite a bit about Windows from me and when she tries to solve someone's problem (generally a guy asking), she's told me some direct quotes like "Can I talk to someone who knows what they're talking about?" or "Isn't there a guy that works here who can help me out?". That kind of shite is for the birds, as beggars shouldn't be choosers when asking for help. I feel rather sorry for those that have to endure crap like that. On the flip side, I've seen women ask for help, and when they realize they've got a girl/woman to talk to that can help them out, they gravitate to them like nobody's business. What helps the situation is me directing people to her when they have questions, even though she may not know everything. Because she's been blown off so much, I have to push the issue sometimes. Effect: she learns more, feels better about it, and more people take her at face value, which while it's wrong that it had to be different than if they were dealing with me, is better than being blown off.
I personally would *LOVE* to have a woman in the same field as me (unix systems administrator for 6 years now), being on the same competitive edge, learning new stuff while working together because honestly, having worked for 2 major companies, I've seen the women that flaunt their looks for the position they're in. I have no respect at all for women that do that, nor for the men that fall for it. Having fought for every inch of the pay raise I get, I believe in the continuing education that people should go through to know more, instead of just looking good or who you know. As of yet, I've never met a woman who carries the same want to learn and will to keep up with me, as I do this 24x7x365, at work and at home.
Sorry for the long post, but there needs to be more women in the market. I see a lot of female DBAs for Oracle, Informix, etc...and quite a few with NT...just not in networking or unix or other platforms like that. Anyways, that's my rant...and for those that say 'understand my point of view when I say it sucks being gawked at all the time as a girl/etc', that sucks...but it's no worse than having absolutely no attention at all from the opposite sex. That was my case in HS and now, people find me no matter where I'm at...why? because I can help them print that 5 meg excel spreadsheet! Amazing...

Hi there!
Seriously, I agree with Terr. What difference does it make? If someone knows what they are talking about, it will be obvious. It shouldn't matter if they are male, female, or a trained African Gray Parrot.
I also agree on this with Terr and Soule. I believe that everyone, regardless of gender-type and race as well, possesss a special talent/expertise or knowledge in a certain field. One's gender is not so important as long as he/she contributes to the best of his/her knowledge for the growth of others.
Have a nice day to all! :)

I must admit that I have found the perfect way to socail engineer information in irc. For some reason, it appears that everyone trusts the females in the ao irc channel. As a *secretary* who had gained the confidence of the network engineer, upper management, other senior systems analysts:
I used to get administrator privileges on the server to grab data off of lazy sales peoples' computers to expedite marketing projects.
I had access to EVERY computer in the company, no questions asked, to load software, even take them off site for service, etc.
I had network passwords and administrator passwords to assist when the network admin was offsite.
They even sent an inexperienced network admin to my home to set up my home computers to dial in and access the company's network (almost every server nationwide).
Good thing I am a good girl.

Not that it was anywhere close to a scientific study, but out of 105 "subordinates" (company speak for those employees you are fortunate enough to look out for...) all of whom worked the same complicated office database (800million$ not counting extensive real estate holdings, a dozen fixed-wing multi-engine and turbine aircraft, a half-dozen choppers, and extensive heavy construction equipment which were on a separate database), the females in my shop seemed more interested in their work, asked more complicated, valid questions, worked harder and never left their office before their upload was done for the day and integrated into the master database. If there was an old file for one of the guys, it went something like; "hell, man, I dunno, that file went outa here on time, didncha git it, man, musta been one a them hackers intercepted it....?" The females ultimately seemed to know considerably more (technically and operationally speaking) about the accounting, reporting, program operation and occasional need for system recovery than the average male employee. If one of the girls did have a crash she always was able to tell me the exact chain of events and keystrokes leading up to the problem, so there was really no challenge to fix it. Whenever the guys had a crash, it went something like; "Wow, man, I dunno, just walked in the friggin' door, man, and bing-bang-boom, crash, man, the sob won't even turn on the blue screen with nothing on it, man..." So it was always a lot more challenging figuring out what problems the guys were looking at (like, "didja clean up all the coffee that spilled from the cupholder, man..?") than it was getting the girls back online and productive. About a 50/50 mix male/female probably. The girls always claimed they had to work twice as hard and know twice as much to get the same credit as the guys. I don't know about that. On the other hand, the females had very little knowledge or social participation in the realm of serious after-hours drinking, smashing their cars into guardrails in an attempt to see if the airbags would deploy... and they hardly ever "broke" their desktops or lost their databases... they never lost their supporting documents, and they never failed to show up for work on time so I didn't have to make complicated excuses to the CEO and then go try to find them somewhere... So, maybe some people might say the male employees tended to make the job a lot more challenging and interesting... I don't know. Just thought I'd throw that in the ring for some reason, probably doesn't mean much...:D :D :D

Hmm...interesting.
I'm a female as well. I choose to use a name that doesn't automatically identify me as such because I've found in some places (although I have encountered this in no way at Anti-online) people equate female with computer illiterate.
I have no family in computers, or any friends that introduced me to them, it is something that I found on my own.
I would like to say in response to this: You know what sucks being a tech guy, at the end of the day (or anytime for that matter), no one wants to here about that program/bug you're working on or that that new firewall/ids box you've just set up is just so paranoid and you think it's cool...

You never see an African Grey Parrot gold eagle? They can be traind in just about any language. I actually watched 2 of them carry on a conversation for about 1/2 hour. They are probably the best talking bird in the world, and most intelligent. And since they live like 80 years, they make an excellent pet/companion. So for those of you that can't find a woman, they are only about $1000 to $1500 in my area. I can honestly say, they are even easier to train than most of the script kiddies in here. When I worked my only pure IT job back in colege, I worked for a department that was mostly women (like late 30) and they were great to work for....now the guys were a major pain, always trying to be the alpha male. My opinon, give me a female boss anyday...
You shouldn't have to ask what gender I am....

Nope-sorry I'm male last time I checked.
I've only met one female pc geek (innosense if you've heard of her), and that was at a 2600 meeting, and I still keep in touch with her........

I'm a female.....and proud of it~! :p
I'm also very pleased that the number of females in the world of technology is increasing at a steady rate.
Gender should never limit a person's goals and dreams to succeed. :)

There's something about the mention of potentially-tech-related-female-activity that draws the often-larger male population like moths to a flame.... why am I here again?

I think it is awesome to see females taking a role that was traditionally (as traditional as the computer field gets) for men. The majority of my graduating class in e-commerce will be females.
