98/Lin dual boot with min impact

Well, I did a bit of preliminary looking around on google, and one guide mentioned something called FIPS to partition without loosing data. What sort of risk is there to data when using fips, and what are some alternatives if I want to get Linux runnig without hurting win98?

Install a second hard drive for linux.
This will have the absolutely least
impact on your existing OS.

With win 9x versions, you should allow linux
to install its own boot loader (usually LILO)
onto the Master Boot Record of the first
hard drive. This is the only impact on your
existing system, and is minimal, and reversible.

With NT based systems (NT, 2000p, XP), use
the NT loader to dual boot.

If you insist on using FIPS, it "should" work
but maybe someone here has more experience
with it. Read the docs on the linux install CD
it gives pro and con of FIPS.

Well, fips does work, but you need to have a drive that is unfragmented (use windows defrag or norton speed disk). However, if there is any data in the lower parts of the disk, you'll probably lose it.

I have Linux Mandrake. I did have Win2000 Pro. Now I have XP but I have them on seperate hard drives. I use the XP boot loader. It works fine for me. I did have them on one hard drive partitioned off. It was nothing but headaches and problems. Now that I hve them on seperate drives. It works like a charm.

Side note: I love Linux, but I have to run XP as well, or at least Win 2000 because thats what 90% of our clients run. As well I have to run MS Office as well. Bummer but, MS still dominates the business world.

Follow the advice from rcgreen, this will work fine.
Considering FIPS: make a backup. ;)

Thanks for the advice. I decided to go with a FAT32 friendly version (Zipslack), which I'm currently downloading packages for.

I'm have a computer running Win 98 and Red Hat 7.0 on a 3.0 Go hard drive. The easiest way is to install Windows 98 first then use Partition Magic (I use version 6), to make your partition. The First one in Fat 32 for Win98, the second one for Linux and third one for Linux Spaw. (This have to be done without deleting the Fat 32 Partition, only resizing bcuz if you delete, you'll have to re-install Win98). Then you just install Linux (I use the autoboot command in the dosutils directory of red hat Cd 1). You can ALSO make your partition using Disk Druid in the installation process but i found it simple to do it with Partition Magic. Lilo should install himself and next time everytime you boot up, you'll have a 5-10 second chance to make him boot Dos or Linux (Dos = Dos, Windows 95 or 98).
