I normaly would'nt post about packet sniffers because there are several oround available. But I went to the AnalogX site today and they have a new packet sniffer availible. It looks promissing. I'm going to test it tonight. Some of you may want to also. The main reason I posted it, is that it's freeware. They have all kinds of goodies for free on that site. Here is the link:

I'll test it today and see if PacketMon is better then Ethereal..
ethereal does not work on XP yet (although their site claims it does, ncap (the core of the prog) doesn't work on XP yet..
So this one is prommising...
But I still prefer the *ux version of ethereal

It seams ok so far. It does a good job logging and analysing network trafic. I use EtherPeek, so it's not as feature rich as it is. For freeware it's not bad. It's as good as some high $ progys out there. I'll reveal more as I rip into it and see what it can do. :D

Talking about packet sniffers, my favourite is Iris (http://www.eeye.com/html/Products/Iris/). It decodes the packets, so you actually can see what is sent on the network (well, it only decodes ascii transmissions). And It's not freeware. :(

I've tried it. It has much less features than ethereal but is much much faster, and uses less memory - I think so :). I like this very much because I usually sniff a great amount of traffic and at some point my ethereal works very slow and my HDD runs like wild ;)

This is a pretty good sniffer. It only took about 30 sec to start detecting although it doesnt tell you exactly what is being transmitted. It does give source Ip and port and it also shows both tcp and udp ports. I didnt think it would actually read anything for the fact that im running a router to my modem. Not bad for free. Also like all the other tools there.

I just found this very good and informative FAQ site about Packet Sniffing and thought I'd share it with you all:

Thanks for the link hot_ice. I haven't read the whole thing yet (there's alot of it there) but what I have read is very informative.
