Just kind of curious as to who everyone is, and what kind of jobs you have. I'm 25, and realizing that working with networks, computers and such is going to be my career. There are so many roads to go down, and learning security is just one of them. Thats why I love doing what I do, and talking to people in the same field.
So I was wondering what you do.

Talk to you later.

Haha KoprDeath sounds like the same thing as me. We only have 3 people in our network team, and should probably have 3 more. So we all have to know everything. We specialize a little but thats it. We even have to do tech support! WOOHOO! We have users all over North America, so occasionnaly we have to ask the users to ship their machines to us. I had this one guy ship me his laptop. He took a manilla envelope, droped his laptop in there, put a few stamps on it, and dropped in a US mail bin. I get the laptop a week later, and the thing has a 2 inch cut right through the middle....you wanna talk about ignorance??

I'm just a kid (Yes, I admit that, I'm only 17). . .I worked as a network admin for some local hospitals, and I'm a part-time tech at a local repair shop. . .I have always had a knack for security, but I'm better at setting it up than breaking it down. (I've locked myself out of my own box too many times to remember)

I own a small company that outsources to small business's that have a need for IT support personel. But don't need any or can't afford any in company full time help. We provide everthing from network installation, system builds, database/sql, web design, programing, or just about anything else that they require. We also do network security and risk managment either onsite or remote. We sell and service everthing from routers/firewalls to network or www servers. A little taste of everything.

How does the old saying go. "Jack of all trades, master of none". LOL :D

Well, I am 24 years old, and currently work for a security consulting firm as a Senior Security Architect/Engineer. I am currently on a very large project managing security for a network of over 150,000 users worldwide.

My background is network security (of couse) but mainly is in network design and engineering, Cisco primarily (CCNP, CCDP, and soon CCIE hopefully). I have a lot of experience in network design for routing and switching in enterprise level environments.

I currently do firewall, IDS's, authentication, vulnerability assessments, and risk management. I also have all Checkpoint certs, and even MCSE (but I do not like to admit that...lol). Also taking CISSP this May.

I have been in the networking/security industry for almost 7 years...and I love it!!

when i started here, they had exactly 2 computers...an original power mac and 386sx-16...

there's now over 30...started on win98 p2p...quickly saw what a mess that was...moved to win2k...sooo well...i'm one of those dreaded "nt admins by default"...difference i guess being that first thing i did...went and bought windows 2000 security handbook. by Jeff Schmidt (from que --i highly recommend it as an introduction)...MS win2k pro RezKit and MS win2k server Rezkit...and read it all...(something like 8500 pages...sheesh) then read a good deal of it again...then started to set up the network...has been...interesting...

and then of course i also get..."how do you change the toner in the photocopier"...and my fav...just this minute i got off the phone from one of our employees...seems their home xp box died...and somehow they think i should have the time to help them over the phone...note this is not a company box...it's some kids xmas gift...FGS...grrrr....and this after a dead hub this morning with the phone ringing...i can't get my email..how come i can't log on...i can't print...ringringringringring...

hmmm....i think i need a vacation.....or at least a drink.... :D

Well...when I got this job, Cisco was the big buzz word in the industry. My Cisco certs got me in the door easily. Now...if you can swing it, i would probably recommend Checkpoint, Cisco and eventually CISSP.

Also a bit of Unix admin experience doesn't hurt.

The group that I oversee ensures that all channels of Verizons long distance operation have or more importantly do not have access to data necessary to perform their jobs. This requires a little knowledge of everything but the members of my team are my biggest asset as my time has been spent on the management side of things lately. AO has been invaluable to my knowledge of information security. :D

How true the normal user can realy get on your nerves. I had a lady call up and state that her coffee cup holder wasn't working any more. I dispatch a tech to try and figure out what she was talking about and low and behold it wasn't a coffee holder that was bad it was her cdrom. The tech said she had a little piece of felt glued right to the tray.

I'm a 21 year IT Director for a School District. Sounds more important than it is b/c it's a small district. I have to take care of anything that uses electricity. Most common problem "Can't access my files" most common solution "Log in!" I have about just under 500 users (students and faculty) only about 70 are ever loggedon at the same time, and have to support two NT servers, Win95-WinXP workstations, MacOS 7-X (infact there are 2 AppleIIe's in one of the special ed rooms that kids point out colors on... only 6 colors to choose from) and a damn lanier coppier that drops my print services everytime a macintrash prints to it (kills spoolers.exe.. any clues?) I look youner than some of the students so I get flack for that. I have 2 assoc. degrees, one in network administration and one in CISCO networking, and I will be finishing up an assoc. in network security in august. Then I'm out of this town and back to where I'm from (Austin) where I have a job waiting (working part time now... reasearching) as a security director. Can't wait to finaly be done.

i was actually very lucky. i am not an official gov employee, but a government contractor. a good friend and fellow techie i knew has been working here for quite some time. when the position opened up, he recommended me and gave them my resume. it took almost a year to actually get hired. a lot of phone interviews and such went on and then finally, after new years, they decided to hire me based on my reviews from former employers that i have been doing on call contracting work for during the last couple of years. trust me, it was not an easy position to get! especially here in pittsburgh. it is very hard to find a nice paying techie job here that is not temp or contract work if you are under the age of 35 it seems. no matter how much experience or pieces of paper you have behind you. if you do get a job near the city, you will usually be very underpaid. unless you are very luky. networking with other people in the field is very important.

I'm 20 years old. I have been employed full time as a web designer / developer for a little over 3 years. HTML, ASP, PHP, SQL Server, and currently learning XML. I got my Master CIW Site Designer certification last year (www.ciwcertified.com). A few of my friends and I are working on starting our own web development company. Things are picking up slowly. For our company I handle all the networking (windows 2k), and the database work for the client sites.

Weeelllll, I am a 28 year old going back to school type...lol. I actually spent about the last five years working at a small credit union as their loan officer/computer fixer(when we called our tech guys, it ended with me on the floor crawling around while they said umm, try this, no, try that!) So, because I knew so much about computers, I decided to go to school....HAHA! Can I just say now, that I knew exactly Jacksh!t, as it turns out. But I am still enjoying going to school, and I am about halfway through my MCSE courses, I will be done June 30.
I would really like to be like TechieChick, I also live in a very small town with slim to no options for their computer and networking needs. I am really interested in networking, but have figured out unless your network is secure....it doesn't matter how good it is, it won't last. My biggest problem is that when I read something in the book and then try it on my computer, I usually break my computer....but on the bright side, I seem to learn more fixing it after it's broke than I did reading it....lol!
Well that's me....not to exciting, but what I get up for every morning....
Oh, yeah, I wound up here because ALL of the instructors I had said it was a really good security site, and seems maybe they were right!!

Ok. Let's see.. I ain't giving my age. Ya'll make me feel ancient! Anyways, I am a professor at a local college and usually I teach security, tcp/ip and hardware (gah! I've become a hardware monkey!). While I'm mostly on the networking side I am trying to use my spare time to learn some programming mostly in the assembly and C areas.

I suppose with my little robot project I will be brushing up on BASIC again. I never dies! I swear.

I am now a student at DeVRY, and am currently learning programming. It isn't a bad place to be, but it isn't the best one. I want to learn as much as I can about computers, because computers grab my attention. Hopefully, some day I will create something to be proud of. And the DeVRY I go to, is now a DeVRY University

I am a 31 yr old Operations Manager. Have worked for the same company for almost 13 yrs. I am responsible for the network, phone system, pagers, two-way radio system, voicemail system, and basically all operations and procedures of the company. I have obtained MCP status but have not had time to get the MCSE. I was also going to school to obtain my BS in CS but had to put that on hold. I have also been designing and developing websites since 1995 and prefer the developing side to the design side, I love to code.
