I'd like to encourage people (http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?threadid=224978#post494264) to take a look at LRs, a minidistro based of LFS (Linux From Scratch), which basically helps you through a long and potentially tedious initial installation and compilation process. I downloaded it a while ago, and thus far it has installed fairly well, except for some reason my keyboard mapping is off. It is very hard to change directories when the / key prints a dash, and the Y key prints a Z, and the Z key prints a Y...

gentoo is a distro that you totally compile yourself. i personally haven't tried it (as it takes half a day to install, and i have slackware :) ) but i have heard rave reviews about it. it also has a supposedly very good package management system that is like freebsd's ports and debians apt
if your thinking of building your own distro, you may want to check it out
