I downloaded ZoneAlarm free and it will let my Sympatico connect! But one question to anyone that has ZoneAlarm, does the internet lock have to be locked to stop trojan attacks?

The Lock option simply stops all network activity between your box and the outside world...

So in other words... No, If you do enable lock it would just prevent you from accessing the internet alltogether.... I reccomend you look at this (http://www.doshelp.com/trojanports.htm) or this (http://www.simovits.com/trojans/trojans.html) trojan port list and block those ports :)

it's not zonealarm...it's just that everyone folowed that sage advice of this thread
http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=227886
and you're the only one left using sympatico..... :D  :D
btw...za should stop most if not all trojans (and spyware for that matter) from phoning home...so make sure you watch those pop up alert boxes....

I dunno why it is making my internet faster cause if anything it should be making my whole computer slower (more space added to hard drive).

do I have to block these ports or are they already on ZoneAlarm (default)? and also, does ZoneAlarm automatically block trojan attempts and if not, can I make it so it does?

za's default security setting will stop all of the inbound and outbound connections that it is designed to block...which is most...but not all...search the archives for za...there are several problems with it that may or may not concern you...
you shouldn't have to manually set up any in bound or out bound port blocking...since za is designed to notify you of connection attempts to all ports...again...usiing standard techniques...there are ways around it...but za if certainly better than nothing....i prefer tiny pfw myself...although i did run za for several years...

na dont lock it.
if u have a trojan it might ask you if u want Sub7.exe to access the internet, all u do is block it, and check what proggies access the internet.

k thanks. is ZoneAlarm (free edition) any good? I am not getting as many alerts with ZoneAlarm (as I did with Norton Personal Firewall), this is making me think its not as good. does ZoneAlarm detect port scans?

I know personnally that ZA (paid version) detects port scans. The free version does too.

The lockdown function on ZA seems, to me at least, to be a PANIC button. If you choose to block all incoming traffic, which is what that button does, you lose your connection...as most ISPs will be blocked from pinging your connection status. Result: You reboot.
The firewall that I use allows one to block ONLY the intruders (a set criteria, of course), and only them, and the subnet mask that they may use. Be careful of what you use to protect yourself...a trigger finger isn't going to protect you...

The way I use the lock in Zone Alarm is to put it on when I plan to be away from the computer for several hours but don't wish to shut down. Yes, I do lose my connection. I suppose if I really wanted the Internet connection immediately when I came back, I could reboot. But I have found that all I really need to do is take the lock off, then do something else at my desk for a few minutes. Heck, I often just play a quick game of Free Cell. And in that time my ISP has found me again and I've got my cable connection back. It may vary with the ISP, though, but you might want to try it and see how long it actually does take.
