Ad-killer for Linux

I've looked around for an ad-killer for Linux, because I've used Proxomitron for Windows for a while now and wanted something similar on my preferred platform. I came up with SwiftSurf (http://swiftsurf.sourceforge.net/index-eng.html), a great little app that can be configured to remove all ad content. Just add the websites you want to filter out to a textfile included in SwiftSurf, and start up the proggie. Then set your browser to use a localhost proxy on port 8080. Easy-peasy, no more ads! And of course it's free!

Or you could use galeon which already has some quite neat ad-killing features (You can deny images from a particular server; you can turn pop-ups on and off easily)

Yes, that's what I do. Under Galeon using the "load images from current server only" setting seems to work quite nicely.

Ditto. Thats what I use with Tux. Plus it auto kills pop-ups and you can customize it. It also has smart bookmarks and a ton of other features. You can change the spinners, toolbars or whatever. Even has tabbed browing that you can customize to work the way you want it to.

These are URLs that should be added to the kill-file (don't remember where I got these). It should take care of most of the advertisers. They can be added to Proxomitron too.

Got a question for you...

Why not just place that list of servers in your host file, directing each to 127.0.0.1? Wouldn't it do the same thing? (I've set up Linux for people, but I've not actually tried doing this on a Linux). I would assume it works the same way, though (it works well with Doze and BSD, anyway).

I guess that would work (with this list of URLs anyway).

In the ad-killer apps there is also the possibility to make a general URL using wildcards, like *.ad.*, which will remove everything with a ".ad." in it. I'm not sure the host-file soulution can handle this.

Good point.

I wouldn't have thought of that. One of these days when I go to update my list, I'll have to make install ad-killer instead. Wildcards would have saved me a LOT of typing. :)
