A "cyber-terrorism event" will take out the Internet
Here's an interesting article in Wired today:

But the market research firm also expects a coordinated terrorist attack that will bring the Internet "down to its knees for a day or two" as retaliation against the United States if it goes to war with Iraq.

IDC fears that a war with Iraq will galvanize hackers to use their skills, perhaps in a coordinated way, to create "economic disruptions" through denial-of-service attacks and even physical attacks on key networks. IDC went as far as to say that such an attack would bring the Internet "down to its knees" for a day or two.

Sadly enough BlueBeard, this isn't the first time, nor will it be the last time we'll be put on these 'cyber alerts'.
Beginning on February 07, 2000, a number of high-profile Denial of Service (DoS) attacks temporarily disabled significant electronic commerce Internet web sites. These cyber attacks targeted companies sites like yahoo.com, amazon.com, cnn.com, buy.com, ebay.com, stamps.com, exodus.com, etrade.com, and zdnet.com; reported victims have apparently recovered from the attacks within a few hours. Public reporting cites coordinated, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks originating from multiple points on the Internet. The FBI is now investigating a number of these attacks

On the afternoon of August 05, 2002, the National Infrastructure Protection Center received credible, but nonspecific information that wide-scale hacker attacks against U.S. websites and Internet Service Providers (ISP) are being planned for later tonight, possibly emanating from Western Europe
