Okay, since this is a new forum... I think we should get something exciting to start it off:

If you have a modded computer, post a pic, tell us about it, get some reviews by some people, and have fun.

I'd get this started but I haven't done anything w/ my box yet so ... when I start I post...

= Cheers,

Man.... I thought we were computer geeks.... I guess I was wrong...

Time to explain I guess.... You all have systems that have more power that you ever need... more useless sh*t than you'd ever need "LCD Lights", Water Cooling, PS in excess of 350W.. useless useless stuff... It's a shame to see people thinking they require more power and more speed and then never using the stuff....

It's kinda like gearheads... you have two types... The kind that drive the old muscle cars.. They can tell you everything under the hood and build that car from the ground up... They love the vehicles and put in the wrench time to make them the way they are... Powerful beasts, but a power that is harnessed and used... you need that power to move the vehicle.. to push that big hunk of steel.. Then you the imports.... "ricers" to use a common term in this area... They take (for the most part) japanese cars... or other foreign cars (occasionally u'll see a domestic.. but we just feel sorry for those people).. and they may put in some of the wrench time, but for the most part they pay someone else to put in the work, so they can have something for show... more power than they'd ever need... more power than they'll ever use...just something to show off.....

anyways... back to my original comments.. That's what your computers sound like... Something flashy to impress people and so that you can play your games and say wow I get 150fps even tho my eyes can only see 30 of those..

Hardware nuts p*ss me off... they want the best of the best, but they never put it to use.....

Anyways. my system...

P3 840Mhz
320MB Ram
32MB GF 2
8x DVD Rom
yada yada yada...

I do software dev., play every game out there, run two or three vmware operating systems at a time.. and at the same time keep up a server.. I see no need for anything with rediculous power. unless you are going to put it to real use.

Aye thought I'd also tell everyone my PC specs in here. It is nothing special but still:

Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz
1024 MB DDR 333 memory
120 GB HDD
Radeon 9000 64mb Graphics card (crap really)
1 CD/RW
1 DVD/RW
1 LS120 floppy drive
1 Floppy Drive
and all the other usual rubbish like new heatsink, 4 case fans new graphic card fan memory heatsink and a fan speed controler on the front of the case.

P.S my hardware definatly get's used to its full potential and i saved quite a bit of money overclocking rather then paying more, so it pays off!

The Reason I have such a huge Power supply Ht Regz is because I have several USB powered devices.

Reason for big Video Card.... Quake...Doom.....Unreal..

The Gigabit Lan came with the mobo.

Fast processor because I use it partially as a server same for all the ram.

Ok.. so onboard is onboard... that's no biggie.....

As for the video... You don't need a Nvidia Gforce 4 TI 4200 128MB DDR ram with DVI and TV out for Quake Doom and Unreal... I run Unreal Tournament 2k3 on my 32MB GF2 just fine..

Fast processor/Ram because you run a server..... as I stated before.. my system is a server.. I mentioned the specs already... and I've got POP3/SMTP running (host email services for 4 websites).. httpd, ftpd, telnetd, WinVNC, mysqld and my system never even slows down.. so don't say a server *needs* that much.. because that would be bs....

Now for the one I want to laugh at..... did you really think that claiming you had several USB powered devices would confuse me or make me actually believe you???... I've seen a full home computer run on a 147W Mini PS.... so even if we assume your comp uses 200W that leaves you with 350W for USB Devices... now the USB Bus will support 127 devices... most low power usb devices draw 100mA.... the highest a USB powered device can draw is 500mA of current.. Pin 1 on USB is the Power Pin.. and it supplies +5V. So. if we assume that every device draws half an amp (highest amount of current ever required).. we get 5V * 500mA which gives us 2.5W... how if we assume you use the full amount of devices that your USB Bus supports... we would get a total power of 317.5W (127 X 2.5W).. You had 350 left over... 317.5 is definately less than 350.... which means your computer (every device) would have to be drawing it's max, + you would have to be running all 127 USB Devices at full power... and you still wouldn't max out your power supply.. So don't tell me your 550W PS is necessary.. It isn't.. not in the least..

As for the video... You don't need a Nvidia Gforce 4 TI 4200 128MB DDR ram with DVI and TV out for Quake Doom and Unreal

1.But it makes me feel powerful.... :)

2.But it would run faster... But yeah you wouldn't need all of that speed.

As far as the power issue is concerned refer to answer number one as stated above :)

HTRegz
June 21st, 2003, 03:51 AM
The whole "make you feel powerful thing" is exactly what my original post was about... as for the make it run faster.. if you are running a server off your home computer, on a home network connection it isn't going to be the machine speed that slows you down.. you are going to be limited by the network connection.. so the only time the speed difference would even appear would be on local network operations and even then it prolly wouldn't be noticeable..

3 vmware at a time with that kind of system? You are lacking a little bit of ram. Man, that must be slow! Do you ever get to do any development et all? You must be sitting around waiting for you box to respond! ;)

Actually, my development box is quite similar to yours. P3 800-something mhz dual processor, 512MB ram. I had never used vmware before, but I needed it to test some web-services. So I installed it and used MS Adv server to run MS Biztalk on 3 vmwares. That didn't work.

Had to upgrade to 1024 mhz of ram - still _very_ slow. Guess I would have been better off with a monster box.

It's all a matter of streamlining your system..... if you get rid of all non-essentials while doing your devel and everything else..

As for ram.. that's tons.. the 3 VMs that I have and run are DOS 6.22, Mandrake 8.1 and OpenBSD..

DOS get's 16MB Ram and Mandrake/OpenBSD each get 64MB..... the rest is for my host OS... Yer entire problem with running so slow was too many MS products.. I refuse to run more than one Windows OS at a time.. because that slows the ***** out of it...

If you were still running very slow.. then yer problems must have been somewhere else.. prolly in the multi-MS products...... hell Explorer.exe alone usually uses up more ram than my VMs..

I am a computer gamer. I build computers for a hobby. I like the glow from the LCD lights. My water cooling is for the overclocking my CPU. This computer I built from the grow up (like what you said). Why do I put all this $hit I don't need, is for the gaming/Beating my friends at work (CompUSA) with benchmarks. I know my hobby is stupid but I like it. I enjoy get my parts in the mail/and get free parts. That's just me ;).

BTW HT "LCD Lights",/ "LCD Light," HA!! took me 20 mins. to find a little mistake ;). Got ya. Heheh.

Thats about the same thing for me also. I play a lot of games and like to beat my friends with a higher benchmark score.

Yes it might be wasting money and what not but its kinda a cool thing to do in my spare time.

I custom built my computer.

I have a brand new Antec case with ... oh, that one my wife took.

I have a server tower case with ... that one my eldest son took.

I have a mini tower with ... my youngest son has that one.

I have an old full size horizontal i286 AT case, upgraded five times to .... my daughter moved back in with her husband, they took that one ( and wiped the dual boot )

I've got it! I have a 386 baby AT case, upgraded twice to a whopping Pentium 233 with 256M memory.

I think I'm doing something wrong!

I think that my PC is well off. I put it together myself. I was debating weither or not to post specs for a while now, but I might as well...

* P3 - 800MHz (133MHz FSB)
* RAM - 896MB (CL-3 running CL-2)
* HDD - 20GB x 2 (IDE) & 120GB USB2.0 HDD (Using 30GB, recently deleted 20GB of old stuff)
* Video - NVidia GF-3 TI-200 (64MB RAM) - Running @ 250MHz instead of 175
* Monitor - I-O Data LCD (1024x768) - LCD uses MUCH less electricty than CRT
* CD/DVD - 1) Smart and Friendly 24x6x4 - 2) Toshiba DVD/CD Combo 40x32x24x6?
* Floppy/Tape - 1 floppy drive, and 1x 420MB TAPE DRIVE (it was Cheap!)
* Sound - Bay Mounted Speaker Set (Cheap quality, half the parts broke during install) and a LEFT Head phone (I broke it)
* Lots of USB card readers and parts and Palm IIIex? (Workpad)

Also, 4 fans... 1 HDD mounted cooler, 2 - 80mm fans, 1 - 60mm CPU fan
Temps are 35c for CPU and up to 40c for system. Air here is hot with no Air Conditioner. Used to have HDD problems, but those are fixed now.

Heheh I should check this forum out more. So I just randomly came across it and will post two pic of my system. Anyway I've done a little modding to my computer, check it out:

Brief description of my system configuration: I'm currently running Windows XP Pro (build 2600) with all updates except for Service Pack 1, on an MSI Ultra 2 motherboard, with an AMD 1700+ XP Processor (overclocked to a 2600+), 512MB of Kingston PC2700 RAM, a Visiontek GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with 128 of DDR memory, a LG 52x CD-ROM drive, a LITE 24x/10x/48x CDRW, a Seagate ST340823A hard drive (Primary), and a Seagate ST380021A hard drive (Secondary).

Cooling: I have a Koolance PC2-C Midtower case that is cooling my processor, chipset, and video chipset.

Peripherals: Connected to my NVIDIA graphics card I have the I-O Display System's 3D Stereo Gaming Glasses, and for USB devices I have a Logitec Force Feedback mouse, a Gravis GamePad Pro, a Gravis Eliminator Aftershock, and an Interact Raider Advanced FX. Also I have a Dell Axim X5 connected to my system via a front mount USB cable. Altec Lansing Gaming 251 6 channel speakers.

Mods: 2 blue LED lit fans to show air intake for the radator, and 2 red LED lit fans to show air exhaust for radator and case, a 12 inch catho tub (6 inches red, and 6 inches blue), 4 radation symbol laser cut grills (2 blue and 2 red), almost full side door window with molding, inside and top Koolance fan enclosure painted chrome, outside except front painted black. Plus to go with the lighting a USB LED blue lit keyboard (I forget the name off the top of my head)

And I have other pics of it too... hehe incase anyone wants to see some of the other crazy stuff up close.
