Hacking contest promotes security
The U.S. government continues to talk tough on computer crime, but here in the desert, hackers--including some from federal agencies--are learning about defending networks by breaking into computers.

Well Dead it has been said for a long time the best way to Secure a Network is to try to get into it. Other people may argue with me here but I will say, that if you want to learn to protect your Network so noone can get into it, "I say that you learn to Hackyour own Network". If you can hack your own Network and get into it then you know what weakness's your Network has and therefore you fix them. That is how I started in Computer Security.
Afterall who better to find them then you, if there found the other way you will regreat it.

just remember security by obscurity does not work. Just a quick example: Martial arts, you can not defend against an attack unless you know how your attacker is going to come at you. And remember, it's not the tools that are evil, it's some of the people behind the tools.

Yep I agree with what you both said and as the saying goes knowledge is power the more you know the better off you are, and to beat a hacker you have to think like a hacker
