help installing redhat 9

ive got the redhat 9 cds from linuxiso.org, burnt 'em and i put in disk one. it ask me language, keyboard, and then what where i want do install from. i have it on the cd so i put cdROM drive then it says that the linux cd is not found on my cdrom, ive never done this before so forgive me if im doing something stupid.

Does RH9 let you test the media before you install it? I know previous versions let you.

It sounds like you're CD-ROM is fine, because you're able to get into the install, or maybe your CD-ROM is on it's way out.

You could try either downloading from a different source or try re-burning the image. Although if you're able to test the media and it passes, then I would assume the image is ok.

If lumpys link doesn't help, then try what I suggested above.

yea good idea about the testing, there could be a CRC error, or a corrupt file due to segmented downloading, i have had that happen before, try redownloading or re-burning the CD or try a combination, that may help.

I think this was mentioned in another thread, but I'll say it again here...

Did you theck the MD5 values of the ISO files after downloading them? The MD5s can be downloaded from almost all reputable download locations. Once you download the ISO's, check these values against the ones you calculate on your box. MD5 tools can be found almost anywhere.

Ensure you have a bootable install CD.

/edit-- You dont say how your m/c is configured for Linux. e.g is it Linux only, dual boot etc

Summary -

You then use this program in the format:

md5sum --check MD5checksumfilename

The md5sum program runs a MD5 checksum on the file specified with MD5checksumfilename, and then compares its answer to the MD5 checksum in the file.

For example, I might download nethack-3.4.0-1.i386.rpm. On the site where I download this, there's a list of MD5 checksums for all of the different versions of this file, including:

20cc27bee69ba82adbd60df04efb9a7a ./binaries/linux/nethack-3.4.0-1.i386.rpm

However, are you booting from CD or floppy?

It is best if you can boot from CD since this will ensure that the install can see the CDROM

You could also try the fedora core - http://fedora.redhat.com

if you want to do a checksum from windows , http://rm.pp.ru/?1.md5 and you will get a free program that will do it.

Another way to go is an ftp or http install. All you need to get started is a linux boot disk. This will take the CDROM out of the picture. If you want step-by-steps, lemme know.
