How to Hack Dr. Pepper Spider - Man 2 Contest
How to Hack Dr. Pepper Spider - Man 2 Contest
I am an avid 2600 reader and love to read on new hacking exploits. I do this just to see ways in which people are getting back at overcharging monopolistic empires. However, it seems anything you read about hacking (any books) you will be reminded over and over that anything can be hacked. I couldn't agree more!
As a disclaimer this thread is not to start a discussion on hacking or the ethics. I do not agree with any illegal hacking and I do not endorse any illegal activity on computers.
So now lets go back to the beginning the title reads "How to Hack Dr. Pepper Spider - Man 2 Contest" you are probably wondering what the heck I am talking well there is a way to hack the Spider - Man 2 Contest! Yes, that’s right! It is possible simply read-on.
Dr. Pepper has always been delicious. Dr. Pepper is what keeps me going on the all-nighters at the office. It is the fuel for the soul (lets not forget crack, it is up there tooo..gnarph--j/k). However it is always fun to win things but during this contest I have drank a few hundred Dr. Pepper bottles and not won a thing. Well I thought how can this contest be won the label that shows if you win or not isn't located underneath the cap so you are not able to tilt in and read the inside of the cap like it is possible on Pepsi. No, D-P thought that got tricky and put the "Please try again" or " Winner!" on the inside of the label and you have to look through the Spidey's eye to view it. Well this is only possible when the bottle is half drank right?! Wrong! If you look at the back of the bottle you will see the nutrition facts and under that you will see the ingredients. Read the ingredients until you read caffeine then look slightly more to the right and you will be able to see the P and the L no matter how much liquid is in the bottle. This will allow you to not buy or open the Dr. Peppers to win. It is simple if you see a P and an L you know that you didn't win so you grab another one from the local store and can continue this until you find a Winner. Congratulations you have just hacked a contest. I do not know the laws on this but as far as I can tell I don't see anything illegal in this action. I know that it is no illegal to try and look at the caps so I don't think this is illegal.
I hope you all find this fun! And remember that anything can be hacked, it is what you choose to hack that makes you talented and a help to society.

P.S. - This is kinda like a tutorial but since it isn't computer related I dumped it in GCC.
Yeah thats right........I said It!
Ultimately everyone will have their own opinion--this is mine.

first - it is good you didn't put this in tutorials because it is not your ORIGINAL work (it also should have had the [ quote] and [/ quote] around it
second - it is not hacking, it is more of a social engineering/cheating on a contest type of thing
thirdly - how does this have ANYTHING to do with comptuers
and finally - even though it may be interesting, what was your motovation for posting this type of article (especially with that title)??

Yes, this is my original work. I discovered this find while waiting for my new server to be configured. I was talking on the phone with my g/f and I was reading my bottle because I was bored and I found it. So Yes it is my original work.

What is social engineering? It is hacking people, you completely contradict yourself you say it isn't hacking it is social engineering however, social engineering is a form of hacking sure you don't use a keyboard but you use other things at your disposal.

It is called GCC buddy! I don't know if you have been reading this forum but not everything in GCC is computer related infact the forum reads
Talk about whatever's on your mind, as long as it doesn't fit in another forum
so I can infact talk about this.
and finally - even though it may be interesting, what was your motovation for posting this type of article (especially with that title)??
Why the hell not, I feel that it is a cool trick and that is someone can win a viper off the deal they would be most happy. I figured to share the knowledge the whole point of these boards. Sure it wasn't computer related but if all you ever think about is a computer you are headed for insanity. And a Dr. Pepper break is always a good thing.

MilitantEidolon: Nice find. I too like DP.
/me runs off to the cooler to stake my claim!
djscribble: Sure it is "hacking". Anything can be "hacked"... computers, gaming consoles, people, locks and yes... even the bottles that your beverage comes in. Since it doesn't really belong in computer security... GCC is a good place for this.
There was something similar not too long ago that everyone made such a big deal of (read Media)... when in fact... I had been doing that for years. They finally wised up about the bottle caps... but MilitantEidolon found a weekness in their methods.
MilitantEidolon: Maybe you'll make it on the 6PM news? LoL
Probably would make it to the news if you post to the Full Disclosure list...
The last one was on there.... IIRC
Ah... here is MsM's post about the Pepsi contest vuln.

Ok... I've found a new way to "Hack" DP.
Take a small razor blade and put it in your pocket.
It'll probably hurt less if its the retractable kind.
Walk to your local grocery store and walk back to the cooler. Most have jackets hanging near the coolers. Put one on so you look like you work there. Walk in the cooler and start slicing off the labels and neatly stacking them so they'll fit nicely in your pocket. Be cafeful not to actually slice the bottle... it'll get a little messy if that happens.
After you've removed as many labels as you deem necessary... calmly walk out of cooler and put the jacket back. Make sure that you didn't put the labels in the jacket pocket... Go home and see if you've won anything good.
If not... head to next store and start again.
Viola! Phish's method of "Hacking the DP"!
Hey... it DOES say NO purchase necessary...

You can also take advantage of how Mcdonald's spiderman 2 contests work. When you scratch off the ticket the letters are in bold black letter with white background. It's possable to scrap off small specs... enought so that its not really noticeable but enought to pinpoint the location and placeing of the certian things. If it comes out black then you know a letter is located there. Its possable to have specificly targeted areas on the ticket to check for winnings since all loseing side of the tickets are nearly printed exactly alike. This would work much like fingerprinting actually. Useing small diabetic lancets or insulin syringes & needles for doting and scrapeing would work perfectly for false "accidental damage" to the covering of the tickets. The only hard part would be finding that EXACT location to check.

You guys are silly :P. I'll have to keep an eye out at the store next time I go to see people closely eyeing labels or slicing them.

I'm either going to get really fat perfecting that method... or I'm going to have to slip a box of burger king fry containers out their back door... hmmmm....
