how can i set AOL to sign off if i'm waiting for a fax
the line goes from the wall to PC to the all-in-one fax. if i split the line at the wall so they are not "in line" but on 2 seperate cables will that help

i think you should just get two phone lines and leave it at that.....
now, if you split the lines, you still wont get a fax while the line is busy (internet) i would assume your using dialup because you didnt mention anything about a filter?? and if you have DSL get a filter and that will let you get faxes....

AOL has a caller ID, and if the fax rings, you will have the option to pick up...allowing the AOL to be disconnected temporarily and allow the fax through.

or... just find one of those "For only a dollar more than dialup get dsl.." companies and sign up with them.

AOL does that too now for an extra $1.05 a month

I don't mean to dumb-down your situation, but from your original post, it seems that you know when faxes will be coming through.
Why not just disconnect from AOL before hand?
Above ground, vertical, and exchanging gasses.
