Jasper??

Hello guys!!!
I have quite a general question/query.
I have been assigned to work on reports, i have to use the Java tool for reports, i.e. Jasper.
the things is that i have no idea about what is Jasper, how does it work and what are the prerequests to work with it.

I did try googling a bit, but was not of much insight.
any sory of information, help or resources will be highly appreciated.
