Hi EG~
That is certainly a new one on me.....................camel and yak droppings have been used as fuel for centuries. In WWII we had vehicles in the UK running on chicken droppings (they generated methane).
The Chinese have also used human excrement as fertiliser for over 1000 years..........they call it "night soil"
I guess the secret is in the enzymes?...........somewhere I have a Queen's Award for Technology necktie..............the company was a glucose refiner and had this super tank that was full of enzymes that cleaned the polluted water that came out of the process. I seem to recall that methane was a by-product?

Hi nihil,
There was a farmer here who ran his vehicles on pig manure until he was shut down for illegally operating a still...
but I've never heard of human waste being used for anything...the story struck me as funny...that is until I read where they save 60% of their electric bill...
with the amount of prisons in North America...that would turn into quite a large sum....the problem with methane though is ozone depletion.
Believe it or not, cows are the number one cause of ozone depletion

Hi nihil,
I always thought it was about cows farting too...up until about 10 minutes ago...according to the sites I checked out on ' methane/cows/ozone ' it's apparently caused by burping and breathing...something to do with their stomach...
The methane produced in a cow's rumen - the first of a cow's four stomachs - gets into the bloodstream and exits through the lungs, said Ken Olson, a range livestock nutritionist at Utah State University.
Almost all of it comes from breathing, though a tiny bit does escape when a cow belches, Olson said.

Cow Breath
There are several major sources of methane: rice paddies (methane-producing bacteria thrive in the underwater environment), swamps and wetlands (ditto), mining and oil drilling, landfills, termites (although there's still some controversy on this one), "biomass burning" (notably in the Amazon rain forest), and animals. Ninety percent of animal methane is produced by ruminants (i.e., cud-chewers). These include sheep, goats, camels, water buffalo, and so on, but most of all cattle, of which the world has an estimated 1.2 billion.

Apparently...US Farmers are taking the dive...Minnesota, Georgia, and Washington States are using Human waste as fertilizer too...

You would think the type of fertilizer used would affect the flavor of the food? Is this why I don't care for Georgia peaches?
Hi foxyloxley,
Nah...the Spec is more into just saying ' poop ' than the enviromental use and utility of poop
Eg ( insert fourth smilely here )

I have just had a word with my wife (#3 ).............when she goes on a shopping trip next, please send me a couple of "Georgia Peaches".................
I do not believe that the type of fertiliser affects the flavour of the food.............mostly the stuff has to be processed/composted before it is usable?
Anyway it is all P:K:N plus trace elements..............vegetables don't "eat" the stuff

PKN is WRONG
