    Network feud leads to Net blackout

    Two major Internet backbone companies are feuding, potentially cutting off significant swaths of the Internet for some of each other's customers.

    On Wednesday, network company Level 3 Communications cut off its direct "peering" connections to another big network company called Cogent Communications. That technical action means that some customers on each company's network now will find it impossible, or slower, to get to Web sites on the other company's network.

    William Steele, a senior network engineer for Syncro Services, said his company noticed the problem Wednesday morning.

    "There are some people I can't send an e-mail to," Steele said. "At home, I have Road Runner as an ISP, and wasn't even able to remotely connect in order to manage our servers."

    Hmm... interesting. I'm always learning something new about how the internet works.

    Had no idea about peering agreements... I thought it was as simple as throw a crap load of routers out there with BGP and let traffic fly. I should have guessed... nothing can be that simple.

    Has anyone here been affected by this? As far as I can tell... I have not...

    the_JinX: I can't access that link either... and I'm coming from a Verizon ISP. You'd think that Verizon would be their own teir 1 and not be affected? I can't even try to traceroute it, or do a lookup on it (whois or samspade), etc.
    Quitmzilla is a firefox extension that gives you stats on how long you have quit smoking, how much money you\'ve saved, how much you haven\'t smoked and recent milestones. Very helpful for people who quit smoking and used to smoke at their computers... Helps out with the urges.

    I cant access the link either from tiscali. I cant ever get a result from a DNS lookup from my router?

    (Never heard of them before, was just irritated that the link from newsvac didn't work and then read this thread)..
