After removing a number of viruses I can no longer browse the net unless I boot into safe mode with networking (windows xp home). I am guessing it is to do with a corrupt TCP/IP. I have ran winsock fix but still cant browse the net in normal mode. Any suggestions? thanks in advance

Reinstall. (say PERIOD... don't just acknowledge it's presence)

I usually use this winsock fix http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
It works very well and I am not sure what you used so that may or may not be helpful.
If you cant figure it out and you do not want to be invasive to your current install and data I would recommend an inplace upgrade. Instructions can be found here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

Why the hell are you still using Winsock anyway? IIRC, Winsock (as a separate library anyway) is completely obsolete. Just reinstall the XP TCP/IP drivers, they're far superior to the 9x series... Or better yet, do a repair install of XP.

I am with HT on this....the best way to recover from a compromise is to reinstall......you could be fighting with this for weeks as TCP\IP is hardcoded into XP....you may never really be able to recover to a stable system.
I have spent days trying to fix something....where I ended up reinstalling the OS....which I should have just done from the start.
live and learn.
Of course back up your data first ;)
